Ok so I think I have it narrowed down, I turn 21 Dec 30th of this year. Im planing on taking my class early January so I can start carrying and before I start carrying Im going to join the VCDL I think it is?

I want a sub-compact I dont want anyone to really be able to see it, I want to wear it on my right hip. I want a good hard (guessing plastic) holster that keeps it protected fairy well since I will be riding.


Ive looked at the clock 9mm or .45, I like it for a few reasons
1) the safety built into the trigger I love that
2) you can throw it in the mud, water, rain, etc and it still fires
3) I have heard they are very dependable

Ive also looked at the Springfield xd .40
Not really sure about this one but heard good things

1911 heard good things about it to, and you can do a lot with it.


So any advice?

Blocks are good, XDs are better. XD's line of sub-compact carry guns are very good.

Get what fits you and you shoot the best and most comfortable with. Find a gun shop/range that has a lot of different rentals, try several as see what fits you.

Holsters are another personal thing. If you get a plastic, make sure it's Kydex. A good leather holster is hard to beat, they do a good job of conforming to your shape. Also suggest a retention holster, keeps it from falling out or from someone grabbing it. Be prepared to invest in several holsters until you find a holster and a method of carrying that works for you.

You mentioned riding. Riding what?

Do not forget the S&W M&P. I tried Glocks and XD as well, but the M&P worked best for me.

and also, a small taurus have i, a PT-145,
tried and true it shoots, but for almost half the cost of those other galoots,...it packs in 10 of your favorite .45, it is sure to make those villains fly...

Refraining from joining in on the brand X vrs Y....

The 2 biggest factors to me were :
1) Budget - how much can you afford for the pistol, ammo, holster, etc
2) most important the ergonomics - what feels best in your hand and on your person in your daily attire and activities

That said I have a Glock 22 but most often carry my Ruger LCP. I don't have a problem carrying my G22 but the Mrs isn't always happy about it! So I carry the LCP in a pocket holster and she hasn't once let on that she knows I'm carrying it

Then you definitely want a good retention holster. I commute daily on my bike (07 ST1300A), but unfortunately, due to my work, no way I can CC. Carrying while riding does come with it's own unique risks.

Since you mentioned 1911 and CC I carry a Colt XSE Lightweight Commander around town or a Kimber Custom II in the bush. I use a Bianchi Pro IWB holster and love it. Rides very close with almost no printing in a t-shirt. And its easy to convert to OC. Comfortable and that pistol aint going nowhere unless I draw it. If you decide that route I would recommend you find a gun store that sells IWB and try it before you buy. I even had them put a gun in for me to check it out. And most importantly you simply cannot beat a quality 1911. Someone will no doubt pop up and say "yeah, but a Glock or XD has a hi-cap mag." Partner I only need 2 shots max - 3 if the scumbag is wearing body armor. And I carry an extra mag. 17 rounds total. If you need more than that then you in deep dodo.

if you're seriously considering the Glock 23, i'd also consider the H&K P2000. the HK is more ergonomic for carry and has a better grip style which more people prefer plus, it has second strike capability.

My roomate got me addicted to his Kel-Tec P32 and I just picked up mine yesterday. I like being able to slip the sucker in my pocket and the lifetime warranty isn't to bad either

I am looking at all the guns listed though still, have till January to decide

No "flipping of a switch" on a SIG-P226.... it's my primary carry piece - almost like AMEX ("...don't leave home without it...")

No switch to flip on an XD, unless you buy the model with it. Mine has the trigger safety and backstrap safety. There is really nothing wrong with a grock either, once you get past the ugliness.

The M&P also has a trigger safety although you can get certain variants with a thumb safety if you prefer one. Go with the one that seems to fit your hand best. I do not think that any of them are a bad choice.
