Range 82

Post by MarcSpaz »

Hey guys. Went to Range 82 today for some pistol practice. While I was there, I took a few pictures of range, including the 200 yard shoot point. Figured I would share.

Range 82 is an outdoor range. The main target area is covered all the way out to the 40 yard point. Then there are 3 covered shoot points at 50, 100, and 200 yards.

This is from inside the first 40, looking out.

This is looking in from the 40 yard point.

200 yard...

I know there was some controversy over the 1MOA group requirement to shoot from the 200 yard point, but looking at the pictures, you can see just how small the targets look from 200 yards. I can see them in the pictures, but from the 200 yard point, I couldn't see them with my eyes.

The 200 is a work in progress. Should be done in about 2 months. I am really liking the sniper blinds for shooting prone behind the wall. The sheet up there now is just a template, but it will give you a good idea about what it will look like when its done.

Thanks for the report. I've been interested in this range, but I pretty much only shoot pistols. How is it for that? Can you just shoot from any range you want under the cover? How does it work when there are people who want to shoot at different ranges? For pistols, any chance you can do anything other than just stand and shoot at paper?

He has a unique setup that seems to work well. As you read about the scheduling, keep in mind that the county has imposed noise limits on his business... no shooting 30 minutes before sunset, regardless of the day.

During the day, Monday through Friday, the facility is used for commercial government contracts and private daily rentals. During Daylight Savings Time (basically 3/4 of the year) after the daily commercial clients leave for the day, he opens the range to general members at 5:00 PM until 30 minutes before sunset.

He keeps hours on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Due to having limited daylight during the week, especially as we get into the end of fall, on Tuesday and Thursday all members fire from the 25 yard line or closer as designated handgun and close rifle days. On Wednesday everyone shoots rifles from either the 50 or 100 yard.

On Saturday, he does handgun and close rifle from 25 yard line and in from 12:00 Noon to 3:00 PM and rifle ranges from the 50 and 100 yard line from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. During the winter, he only keeps Saturday hours for general members.

As far as shooting pistols "on the move" or from longer ranges (i.e. 50 yards), it depends on you as a shooter, how many people are there, and if you have established a particular level of trust with the owner. It all comes down to safety... no restrictions are personal. As the range owner, he is responsible for all people on the property as well as everyone off the property. He has neighbors and people being shot off-property is a real concern. He is a professional trainer for the federal government and has been a pro shooter for 40 years. He has a pretty good eye for people.

After about a year of shooting there and getting to know him, I was allowed to setup partitions and do weapons transitions (M4 & sidearm), tactical reloads, etc. while no one else was there. If others arrived, I did have to stop.
