Silencers

Post by GregVa »

I am about to purchase a bolt action rifle for deer hunting and considering getting a threaded barrel for the future silencer. I have not done a bunch of research, but I think the best way to purchase a silencer is to set up a trust? I am in Prince William county and I have heard this is the only way to get one?

Who has purchased a silencer and set up a trust? Have you had any issues with it, and what advice can you offer?

What other ATF things do you have to do to do this?

Thanks

I set up a trust with a lawyer that my LGS suggested. http://johnpierceesq.com/?page_id=45. He was quick and very helpful. Gave me 24 hours to look it over before I paid. From there I went to my bank and had it notarized. Went back to the gun shop and they helped me fill it out and they mailed it to the ATF along with my $200. Now I'm just waiting on the ATF.

There are no problems with using a quality trust. A questionable trust drawn up with some legal form maker software from the internet may leave you or your trustees with some headaches down the road. The price difference between a lawyer done trust, vs self done is much less than the lawyer will cost to help straighten things out later if there is a f-up.

If you are willing to spend $400-$600 more than the can, there is no reason not to do the trust, and so-so-so many more reasons TO do the trust.

Too broad of a question. Narrow it, and I can try to help.

Simplistic answer to your question. See a lawyer have a trust drawn up. Goto gun store buy suppressor. Fill out form 4. Mail paperwork. Wait a year. Take possession. Enjoy. Repeat.

I have a trust through Arsenal Attorneys. I was very happy with their process.

One other nice thing in regard to having a trust. With the trust, you can fill out a form 1, ect to build your own suppressor, and file it electronically. I have seen some of the guys over on silencer talk stating they had their approvals in weeks using a trust, and the new upgraded electronic filing system. That sure beats the heck out of waiting 9 months to a year. Just a thought, and the ST forum guys have a ton on info for anyone building their own.

New models! Bolt action. Ruger Americans are awesome rifles for the money. Top it off - .300 BLK.
