Chafin wins Puckett seat; GOP holds Senate

Del. A. Benton “Ben” Chafin Jr., R-Russell, won a special election Tuesday for the Southwest Virginia seat formerly held by Sen. Phillip P. Puckett, which means Republicans will maintain control of the state Senate.

Chafin easily defeated Democrat Mike Hymes, a Tazewell County supervisor, and independent Rick Mullins.

Chafin’s victory gives Republicans a 21-18 edge in the state Senate. That means the GOP will continue to lead the chamber if Democrats hold the Richmond-area seat of retired Sen. Henry L. Marsh III, in a Nov. 4 special election.

It's a VERY good thing. Ben Chafin is a rock-solid conservative, but not an inflexible ideologue. He can, I believe, be counted upon to safeguard conservative values and " The Virginia Way" without falling into bitter partisan impasse.

mc yankee is a reason I think as soon as VA has the chance they should pass the following

1, no more voting for felons. It is legal under the 14th amendment to do it and would neutralize many who vote for a living instead of work. I am sure way more felons voted for Obama than Romeny

2, You have to win over 50% of the vote to win. No more fake third party candidates.

Virginia is a decent, Christian state that the liberals are trying to make like Delaware, Florida, and Maryland. You know what they all have in common? Yanks moving south and telling decent people how to run their lives.

YES! I know some "insiders" " highrollers" (whatever) and they had private meeting with him and he SPUN everything , I had 1 client tell me that HE (terry) is different????? This guy is a long time conservative & business guru! Terry brainwashed him before and after election...telling all sorts of lies like "...Im not about Dem or GOP...I'm about Virginia Business..." blah, blah, blah.

I just had a lump in my throat as he is telling me this crap. Holy moley!

makes me miss the good ole days when a yankee like mcawful could be ran out of the state. Come to think of it our streets were safer back then as well. We watched bugs bunny and Yosemite sam shoot at each other yet did not having shootings in school. Kids respected their teachers and parents.

I guess that forced diversity, multi-culutralism and everything else libs thought were good in the 60s really made the country a better palce

Im part of that generation...but I grew out of it. The "free love" folks who did not grow up are now in charge at every level in GOVT, EDUCATION etc. And we wonder what went wrong?
