The internet is a public resource made up of a large group of privately owned computers sharing information publicly.

If you have an agreement with a service provider that there is expectation of something being private, to the degree that you expect only a defined group of people only you have control over, will have access to the information, then that information would require a just cause and a warrant to access for anyone to access.

That said, if you don't want anyone to know about it... don't post it in public forums, blogs or community social media services on the internet. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

You can't complain about privacy rights when you are speaking publicly in the middle of a city park and someone records you. Same thing on the internet

It does not bind third parties who may access the information.

HOWEVER, if you publish that same "something" on a public forum, Anyone who accesses it legitimately may do so; and further disseminate it to the extent it is not libelous. I think it is very clear the generally speaking you have NO expectation of privacy with respect to anything you post on a social media site.

And as distasteful as it is to me to have schools snooping like this, I see no reason why they can't do anything along the lines of monitoring social media posts that anyone else can. What will get them in trouble is what they do with the information.
