Well,
I am finally settled into my home, job, etc in VA. I am in the Colonial Heights area. What is around that I can get involved in (VA second amendments rights groups, IDPA matches) where I can meet some fellow shooters and maybe a hunter or two? Anyone know about the "VCDL" and the IDPA matches at Colonial Academy in Richmond? Their website doesn't look to me like a typical IDPA shoot location. But I've never been to one and want to check it out!
I think I am going to get a membership at Smoking Gun in CH because it's only a couple miles from my house. I will go there a couple times first just to see if it is crazy crowded or good for my desire to practice with my pistol.

...shoot, you've already been welcomed a while back - congrats on getting settled in!
Hope you find everything you need and come to love this place (VA) like I do.

For IDPA near you, check out Black Creek and Colonial Shooting Academy. Wed afternoons for the former and Tue nights for the latter.

Re: Looking to get involved
There is an active IDPA group that has shoots all over the state. In addition to Colonial and Black Creek, not too far from you there is a monthly match at Cavalier R&P Club in Montpelier, and one at Rivanna R&P Club in Charlottesville.
VCDL is the Virginia state 2A rights organization - very active, thoughtful and well worth joining.
For some rifle fun, look into appleseedusa.org . There are shoots coming up at Cavalier in each of the next three months, and at Black Creek in December.

Re: Looking to get involved
Thanks for the input. I just joined VCDL. I'll be getting my first centerfire pistol (Glock 19) in a couple days (waiting for the gunbroker to ship - even with transfer fees, I was able to get a much better price than anyone around here had it for) and then I'll look up you guys for a time to go shooting. Hoping to go check out the CSA idpa shoot next week as an observer.
