7.5" to 10" SBR - Barrel Life Expectancy?
Re: 7.5" to 10" SBR - Barrel Life Expectancy?
With the 300blk you only need a 556 barrel to switch back.

could allways look into a mectec. Glock carbine kit.MarcSpaz wrote: Anyone know if such a creature exists? Something that looks like a .45 SBR, but is a pistol? Is that something I should build?
The Kriss vector is an option as well.
now I'll throw you another reevaluate everything option.
Short, high energy, rifle.
hows about a 10 or 12.5" 458 socom?
parts available here. http://www.tromix.com/socom-parts.htm
When a 5.56 dreams it hopes to expand to .45 cal... why not start there? In longer barrels it essentially gets you into 45-70 level power in an AR platform. I've got on in the 16" flavor, and its very impressive.

I checked out the Vector before. That is one nice piece of hardware.
That 458 is wild, isn't it? Now you're just trying to get my head spun around.
I have seen them before. I have never seen the ammo for sale at any gun store I have ever been to though. That's part of the reason I have stayed away from them in general. Well, that... and it's major overkill for in the house. LOL shoot through 4 rooms worth of walls and kill my neighbor by mistake.

I thought about that before. Just register my M4 as an SBR and have two uppers. But most of the cost is in the upper. I would rather spend the extra money and have a complete riffle.0ne5hot wrote:With the 300blk you only need a 556 barrel to switch back.

nope, there is commercial ammo, its been submitted to SAMMI tho I haven't seen it get accepted/published yet.MarcSpaz wrote:I checked out the Vector before. That is one nice piece of hardware.

18 months ago you could have said the sam of 300 blk too.I have seen them before. I have never seen the ammo for sale at any gun store I have ever been to though. That's part of the reason I have stayed away from them in general.
unless you run frangible, your 5.56, or .45 will do that too.. well perhaps not quite 4 rooms, but 4-6 sheets are drywall isn't much resistance to a bullet.Well, that... and it's major overkill for in the house. LOL shoot through 4 rooms worth of walls and kill my neighbor by mistake.

Build a 300 blk upper and start reloading. That's my plan… in fact, I'm attending the NRA reloading class this Saturday in Centreville!

Cool, I'll see ya there! I'll be one of the instructors for the class.bryanrheem wrote:That's my plan… in fact, I'm attending the NRA reloading class this Saturday in Centreville!

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

My dad got himself a 50 Beowulf to one up me and my 458 Socom. That thing is a beast, the recoil is crazy mostly because he is still using the standard 556 buffer (3.2oz) and buffer spring. I moved up to a 12.0oz buffer using the standard buffer spring it works well at reducing recoil and slows down the bolt carrier a bit which helps with feeding ammo from older 556 mags. Still you can't go wrong with a Fifty...dorminWS wrote:45-70 level power in an AR platform? How about this?

Yep. The recoil is pretty heavy. Worse than a 10-gauge pump shotgun.

Selection of .50 jacketed projectiles are less of a selection I'd like.dorminWS wrote:45-70 level power in an AR platform? How about this?

Needs modified magazines/follower
plusses for the 458 socom.
.458 rifle bullets, lots of choices from 250gr-600gr
Standard AR mags, and followers, no mods needed.
Both cartridges get you into the high-energy category, I just felt the 458 gave me better options. Plus all my ar-15 mags are now 'standard capacity' 10 round mags.

leigh has some very interesting projectiles, for a variety of applications.
Re: 7.5" to 10" SBR - Barrel Life Expectancy?
I had looked at both of those about 2 years ago, but liked the 450 Bushmaster better. I have not been able to find one since though. Similar to either out to 100 yards, but better at longer ranges.
Re: 7.5" to 10" SBR - Barrel Life Expectancy?
10.3 is the shortest length you can go and still be effective out past CQB distances. That's why the MK18 is the length it is. A barrels length has nothing to do with longevity or barrel erosion. 5.56 is ideal for home defense because it is so fast and the bullet so light that it has a tendency to lose lethality upon contact with a wall. This is why SBRs are becoming the norm for CQB engagements in MIL and LE.
I recommend a Daniel Defense MK18 upper paired with a good quality lower. As already stated the Sig arm brace is a good choice to avoid getting put on list, having to wait 8 months, and spending $200 more dollars.

I had a SCAR 17 and 16. I also had a bunch of Glocks and a couple H&K pistols. Oh and a DDM4, but I sold everything when our government told me these dangerous tools can actually hurt someone. Apparently they grow legs and go on killing sprees.

Sweet! The email I received talked about range time, but I'm assuming this is strictly a classroom setting, correct?jdonovan wrote:Cool, I'll see ya there! I'll be one of the instructors for the class.

100% classroom. No range time.
