1. Reminder: VCDL membership meeting in Charlottesville on Tuesday, July 22
**********************************************************
July 22 is the next VCDL meeting at Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club, Charlottesville, VA. It is located just 4 miles south of I-64 so it is easy to find and convenient for many in central and western Virginia.
We start the meeting with a potluck dinner and some fellowship. The main course is provided as are the drinks. We ask that those attending dinner bring a side dish or dessert to share. There is no charge for dinner, although contributions to VCDL or the VCDL-PAC are always welcome! If you are unable to bring a dish, please don't let that stop you from joining us. There is always plenty to go around!
We follow dinner with what always proves to be a lively discussion about gun rights in Virginia. Since the new laws take effect the first of July we will look at what the General Assembly passed last year and what is on the wish list for the coming legislative session.
Membership in VCDL or RRPC is NOT required to attend these meetings. In fact, we hope you will bring a friend or neighbor so that they can see for themselves what VCDL is all about. This is also an excellent opportunity to get a peek at the RRPC facilities. Again, we thank RRPC for hosting these meetings.
When: Tuesday, July 22, 2014
Time: Dinner 6:30 pm, Meeting 7:00 pm
Location: Rivanna Rifle & Pistol Club

2. Suicides critical for antis to pad their statistics
**********************************************************
The antis desperately need to count suicides to try to make their case Apparently deaths using firearms beat deaths in automobile accidents for the first time in Vermont.
BUT, there are usually less than 5 murders using firearm each year in Vermont and the remaining 70 or so deaths related to firearms are SUICIDES!
Not a compelling case for the antis.

3. Russian AK-47 imports banned by Executive Order
**********************************************************
I knew this would happen and I’m not sure all the shoes have dropped, either. New AKs from Kalashnikov in Russia are now banned because of Russia’s invasion into the Ukraine. Existing Russian AKs in the U.S. that are owned by citizens or gun dealers are OK.
Please note that Romania and other countries also supply AKs. But for those of you who like Russian AKs, now might be the time to buy one.

4. [CA] Who needs a gun as a bank employee or customer?
**********************************************************
Violent criminals take over a bank and abduct three female hostages, one of whom was simply a customer. During a lengthy gun battle, two criminals and the customer hostage were killed. The other criminal and two hostages were hurt.
The deceased customer was being used as a human shield by the criminal. The really violent criminals have no conscience and will do something cowardly like that in a heartbeat. Your only hope of survival is to be able to use decisive force against them.

5. House votes to block D.C.’s gun laws
**********************************************************
Tired of DC’s tyrannical gun-control laws that only hurt the good people, the House is sending a message to DC.

6. Thought: Universal Background Checks would necessarily lead to gun registration
**********************************************************
VCDL VP Jim Snyder reminded me that “universal background checks” cannot be enforced without “universal gun registration.” How else could the police know if somebody engaged in a private gun sale without a background check unless the police knew exactly which guns everyone had? And how would the government know if gun owners were complying with the universal registration unless there was also universal compliance inspections?

8. A look at the progressive guide to gun-control, #2
**********************************************************
Because the antis are losing their battles, they are trying to change how they couch their arguments. Basically hoping semantics will trump logic and facts.
To start a discussion on gun control, the guide suggests this to antis:
"The most basic purpose of government is to keep law-abiding citizens safe and secure from crime. But every day, far too many of us are victims of gun violence. Dozens of Americans will be murdered, hundreds of others will be shot, and nearly one-thousand will be robbed or assaulted with a gun—today.”
Let’s look at that statement more closely. ""The most basic purpose of government is to keep law-abiding citizens safe and secure from crime.” Only to communities, generally, and as a whole. The Supreme Court has already ruled that the police have NO obligation to protect any individual. That means individuals have to be prepared to protect themselves.
“Far too many of US are victims of gun violence.” What “us” are they talking about? The majority of those being shot are criminals being shot by other criminals or police. Suicides are a majority of the rest of the shootings and that is not something that falls under “gun violence.”
The antis are also told to say this:
"It is obvious why so many people are killed or victimized with guns, day after day — we have some of the weakest gun laws in the world. To make us, our families, and our communities safer, we need to change a few of those laws — now.”
We already have way too many gun laws in America. And where those laws are the most stringent are NOT the safest places by any stretch of the imagination - just look at Chicago, DC, and Maryland for starters.
