Don't laugh. This is how the Navy will install Windows 8.1...

The only good thing that MIGHT be said about 8.1, is if it were to interface more like 7! Otherwise... ehhh...

I still have my DOS 5.0 and DOS 6.22 floppies as well as the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 floppies and Windows 95A floppies.

For those who don't know, Windows 95A Upgrade was a shell that ran over DOS 6.0 or higher and ran 32 bit emulation. Even if you ran a fresh install, it laid down DOS before the GUI went into place, but a fresh install allowed actual 32 bit operation with the "full version". It wasn't until 95B was released that the 32 bit kernel was the primary sub-system and DOS 7 was the secondary shell.

95B and 95C were the original "service packs" of their day, but unless you got a bootleg disc, the only way you were getting a copy was to buy a new computer that came with a Windows OEM disc.

Okay, now that my age is showing... I have to wake the kids!!! Later!

I remember installing IBM OS/2 from 5 1/4" floppies back in the early 90's. It was painfully slow to install, but OS/2 was pretty cool back in the day.

This was back when the we were installing IBM IVR's for the state to track deadbeat dads. Now I'm really starting to date myself too.

IMHO, the three best Win OSes to date:

W98SE
XP-PRO
Win7

I too have some DOS 6.22 floppies, but I bet even if I had a good working drive, the disk are probably no good...

Some where I have a CD-ROM with the disk image backed up on it, wish I could get a real basic computer running DOS again, there was a LOT I could do with QB4.5 compiled to an EXE!!

Not only do I agree with your assessment of the 3 best OS'... I am using Windows XP Pro on my PC right this very moment. And that is only because Office 2007 and newer won't run on 98SE. LOL I do run Win 7 at work.

I just built a new PC that's running Linux Mint 15 and OpenOffice 4.0. I'd use that as my primary computer before I'd switch to Windows 8.

I remember installing Windows 3.something around 1988 or so. It took me a couple of days to install, and day to realize that it was a dog, and then a couple of days to unintsall and get me back to DOS. That was on my AT with a whopping 40 Mbytes of hard drive space and 640k of memory. But, compared to the punch cards that I learned on, I thought it was pretty advanced.

Ah yes... the days of punch cards. Dropping stacks of cards as you were going to feed them is a nightmare I don't miss. I just wanted some holes drilled! Is that too much to ask?

Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but the nostalgia weighs heavily upon me.
Thirty-six summers have passed since I fed punch cards to the DEC10 at ODU, yet well do I remember the sound:
Ten round burst
Pause to gauge effect
Trigger down 'til the magazine is empty

Thanks for the memories

BTW, am I the only one who had problems with XP eating floppies? I had to resurrect an ME box a while back to salvage some 3 1/2 and 5 1/4 discs because I didn't dare try it on XP.

Regards,

George
