Mailman
I'm new here so let me start by saying howdy ya'll. My wife and i are considering obtaining concealed carry permits. For me, i just think it's agreat idea but for her it's a little different. You see, she works for the postal service delivering rural route mail and on more than one occasion she was approached by some perverts! The route she delivers is extremely rural with one way in and out. After being approached by these punks, she reported it to her supervisor who agreed to come out on the route to check on her but he never found anyone. So she asked if she could carry a pistol, for self defense, if she obtained her CHP. He said that you ca'nt carry in a gov't. vehicle but the vehicle she carries in is owned by us. So, i do'nt know if by her carrying mail in it makes it a gov't. vehicle so she ask about it and his reply is "I do not reccomend it". If anyone has any information on this please let me know, somtimes i'm concerned for her safety and if she could carry a "peace" (piece) i would feel much better! Thanks All

This link is from the VA state police site and if you read a bit down the page it will state where persons carrying mail can carry... If it was my wife I'd get her permit and just not tell her obviously paranoid boss,,, http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504 ... d+18.2-308

Re: Mailman
I know a couple of rural mail carriers and even though it's your own vehicle the answer is no. She can not carry while on the job. I know it sucks but thats the gubment for ya.
Re: Mailman
She'd be carrying on federal property at some point- she has to go to a post office (federal property) to get the mail right? First you need to determine whether it's against the law to have a firearm on that property, on most federal property it is. You mention that it is your vehicle not government owned vehicle, does you wife work under a contract or is she an actual employee of the U.S. Post Office? If she is an employee you'll have to find out what thier rules are regarding employees carrying weapons while at work, if she works as a contractor you'll have to find out what the contract itself says and also what the rules for Post Office contractors are.
The state of VA can allow mail carriers to carry firearms but they are still subject to federal laws and postal regulations. If ferderal law or postal regulation say no then she can't carry regardless of what the state says.
It's going to difficult for anyone on this forum to be of much help since so much of it depends on her status as a postal employee and the rules, regulations, and federal laws concerning mail carriers. Maybe someone that works for the Post Office will happen along and be able to shed more light on it. I think in the end you'll probably find that she cannot carry a firearm without risking her job, the term "going postal" came from somewhere didn't it?

Agreed .. there are a lot of grey areas I found looking around,,It seems that states allow mail carriers of the US Mail to carry but never mention if they are employees/contractors of the Post Office or Private carriers /couriers like a corporation may have, This one will take some digging to settle if they can or can;t and under what circumstances it is allowed,,,
