Anyone out there own a Sig 556?
Anyone out there own a Sig 556?
I'm a big fan of their pistols and the rifle has peaked my interest. Curious if anyone out there has own and what your opinions are?
Re: Anyone out there own a Sig 556?
Mine is a 556R. I like it, a lot. It has replaced my AR15 as my road trip rifle.
I even got a SIG 522 as a lower cost trainer.
You know, they've stopped making the 556/556R like I have. Now they are called 556X (I believe) and they are "modular" You can change barrels, bolts, etc. and shoot different calibers in them. Look them up on the SIG website.
Mine is accurate and reliable (so far) with Wolf ammo. Not so accurate with Tula ammo. I got some of the Red Army ammo the other day but haven't tried it out yet.
Easy to clean (doesn't get nearly as dirty inside as the AR15 because it is a gas piston gun. The 556 uses AR15 magazines and the R version uses AK magazines.
Mine has the SIG BUIS on it. Some people like the AR15 type BUIS but you either get one with a free float handguard and use the AR BUIS that go on the end of the free float tube or there is one place (can't remember the name) that makes a folding BUIS that fits the SIG gas block.

it seems like it is a mix then between the ak bolt and action and the ar customization then?

The magpul composites fit on the gas block no problem. I have 3 pair of those and the two pair of AL that came with the battle rifles.
I don't have a model 556, but I just bought my 4th Sig in 2 years and I love em'. Doesn't seem to matter what flavor ammo you like, their stuff is rock solid. And I love the short stroke piston. Stays cool, clean and no change in recoil that I have seen/felt.

GP is a GOOD thing, much better concept than DI!!

Yep, the price is a bit high. But this really is a case of you get what you pay for. Not sure where you're at, but if you are close enough to me to meet up at a range, I'd be happy to let you try out my 516 (AR15) and 716 (AR10) if you want to get a general feel for what to expect brand wise.

With respect to a folding front sight that fits on the Sig556 gas block, Samson makes a couple:

For a wide variety of info on the Sig556, try the SigArms556 forum:

Mine is accurate, does better with heavier grain bullets (I stick to 64 gr and up in it) & has been flawlessly reliable. The folding stock is tight and has no wiggle.
On the con side--you really need to take off the factory sights to install optics, and mine (NIB) came with a problem--the gas block was slightly canted, throwing off the position of the front sight and making it very difficult to reassemble the front hand guard after cleaning. I sent it back to Sig, they fixed it in a week, and I've had no issues since--that was obviously a factory QC problem.

Marc, I wish you weren't 3+ hours away, Id love to call you on that offer!
Im interested in the 556R!
But to be honest, Ive yet to find a reason to part with the AKs, thinking of adding a TDL rail and rear peep (deleting the mid position rear leaf).
