Transporting Ammunitions

Post by unleashd »

What are the laws around transporting bulk ammunition in the trunk of your car? Within the state, Interstate? For e.g., while driving from NC/TN/WV/MD/PA to VA, if I pick up a few thousand rounds of ammo and keep it locked up in the trunk of the car all the way home, is that OK? Let's assume that I do not have a gun in the car or on me. What are the laws IF I have the gun with me, except in MD?

NOTE: I am only talking about transporting ammunition here, and not guns.

Firearm-related laws vary from state to state. The states you should be most careful in are MD & DC while transporting ammunition.

Never take ammunition into DC under any circumstances!

You can review laws state by state here: http://www.handgunlaw.us/

Yea, not sure about other areas, but in DC, if you are not a resident, you WILL go to jail for a single empty brass cartridge with no primer. If you are not a resident, you WILL go to jail for a single projectile. Same goes for any propellant or "explosive material" designed for use in a firearm.

Wow...! Good info to have. I drive through there probably once a year to a friends place who lives in MD. I'll definitely remember to sweep my truck before I go through there again. It ain't out of the ordinary to have some empty brass in the back of the truck.

Plus, I keep an empty brass with me that was fired at my Dad's funeral. That would be some crap wouldn't it..? Go to jail for having empty brass with you from a military honors service..? :bangin:

My mom is having one made into a necklace. Think she would get booked in DC for wearing that..? If so, those would be some headlines no..?!?

Don't do it. Let me tell you what happened to me 4 years ago...

I had a decorative .223 round made into a key chain. I was detained for 4 hours because I was getting gas and a DC LEO saw my keys on my hip. Several of them debated over arresting me. FPS showed up because I was close to the Capitol. Everyone was tossing my truck and asking my why I had the ammo. They kept asking me where the rifle was too. After awhile their Captain showed up. They were getting ready to arrest me, pulled my wallet to get my ID and found my DHS CAC / ID. The FPS Captain said "why didn't you tell us you worked for DHS?" I told him I'm a contractor, not a LEO. He just laughed and cut me loose.

If the feds didn't show up and trump DC police, I would have gone to jail that night and had a hell of a battle proving it was a decorative key chain and not a bullet.

Yeah. Maryland and DC can plant tulips where the sun don't shine.

My personal vehicles don't go there. Ever. My mother has one of my cars;I know that I have loose ammo floating around that one. And, when I was looking for something in my van, back around Christmas, a random .32 round surfaced. I don't even have anything in that caliber.

All it takes is one overlooked casing or round to ruin your day. I didn't leave anything in those places, so I have no reason to go back to them.

DC is bad, don't take anything that is remotely related to a firearm into DC.
Also don't bring Knives with a 2.5" blade or longer that fold, it's considered a "dangerous weapon", same penalty as carrying gun,
Mace or even a stun gun. all are also illegal.
