One-half hour after the house adjourns (probably sometime around 2 PM or so) on Wednesday, January 22, the Senate Courts of Justice committee will meet on Senate Room B (ground floor of the General Assembly Building on the 9th Street side). If you wish to attend to show support for VCDL, please do so. The committee will consider a host of bills:
Bills VCDL strongly opposes:
SB 39, Marsden, non-existent gun show loophole bill
SB 287, Deeds, twists gun owners arms under threat of penalty if gun sold to a prohibited person to have private sales run through a gun dealer
SB 377, Reeves, requires dealers to run a stolen check on all guns they purchase, transfer or trade to a non-dealer
SB 510, Favola, takes away gun rights for certain *misdemeanor* convictions
SB 520, McEachin, universal background checks - all private sales of firearms must go through a dealer
Bills VCDL strongly supports:
SB 369, Garrett, allows CHP holders to have loaded long guns in their vehicles
SB 396, Vogel, allows CHP holders to skip the state background check and state paperwork when purchasing a firearm
SB 608, Carrico, creates lifetime CHP permits. If the language from Del. Campbells HB 644 is substituted, instead of the original language from Del. Lingamfelters HB 736, we strongly support this bill, otherwise we oppose this bill
Bills we are neutral on:
SB 576, McEachin, expedites reporting an order of commitment
SB 600, Cosgrove, restricts how far back in time a Circuit Court Clerk must protect CHP information from dissemination. We are neutral if the same language that was used in the House is also applied to the original bill
SB 610, Cosgrove, makes sure that all records that disqualify someone from legally owning a gun are shared with the federal government for use in the NICS system
