1. Time change for Bedford County Board of Supervisors meeting tonight
******************************************

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors meeting is going to start at 7:30 PM, not 7 PM as I first stated. Also, they have some other items on the list first, so I expect that they won't get to the public comment period until around 8:30 PM. Finally, there is no need to call ahead of time if you wish to speak. There will be a sheet to fill out at the meeting instead.

Here is the updated item:

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors is going to meet this Wednesday, November 13, at 7:30 PM.

As you might recall from a previous VA-ALERT item, the Bedford County Board of Supervisors want the law changed so that schools can arm teachers if the schools wish to do so and if the individual teachers want to participate.

While this isn't as far as VCDL would like to go, it is an excellent start that will make schools safer and might well save some precious lives.

Those of you in the Bedford area: let's show our support for the Board of Supervisors by attending that meeting! I plan on attending to speak on behalf of VCDL. f it appears that we get enough of you to show up, I'll ask the audience members that agree to stand up. You could also make your own statement to the Board of Supervisors, just fill out a form to do so at the meeting.

I'll arrive around 7:25 to hand out "Guns Save Lives" stickers.

Location:

Bedford County Administration Building
122 East Main Street, 2nd floor
Bedford, VA

See you there!

Good company, food, raffles, a VCDL booth - this is going to be fun!

Open Carry Day slated for gun rights Saturday
By Gwen Johnson

NEW CASTLE – Main Street Days will feature the first Annual Open Carry Day this coming Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown New Castle. In the Commonwealth of Virginia it is completely legal to open-carry a firearm.

The Craig County Artisan Center also on Main Street will have potter Rebecca McKeever demonstrating how to throw clay pots, and she will be offering children’s art lessons.

The Open Carry Day portion has three speakers scheduled beginning at 10:30 a.m. They are:
• John Ainsworth, founder, America’s Remedy;
• William Carr, former Congressional candidate 9th District of Virginia, and
• Philip VanCleave, president, Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL).

There will also be private sellers with ammo cans and holsters and numerous other vendors. To date there are 22 in all listed on the event’s website (www.newcastleopencarryday.org ) as well as Facebook. Further info can be obtained by e-mailing newcastleopencarry@gmail.com or calling (540) 929-0387.

Vendor spaces are free as are private seller spots by contacting Phil Spence to reserve a place at 540-309-6650. Sponsors said food vendors are needed since the Locust Mountain Grill who will have limited seating that day and one other vendor doing barbecue are the only ones doing food.

Anything from breakfast biscuits to hamburgers and hot dogs, chili beans, sandwiches, cold drinks, coffee, hot chocolate or whatever private individuals or organizations can come up with. Event sponsors are expecting a crowd. There will also be funnel cakes and fried Oreos.

Anyone who has a special firearm or any related items can use the show-and-tell area. The activities will be located in the large dining room at Locust Mountain Grill and the building next door to it.

The Craig County Child Care Center will also be giving away free gun cabinet locks, courtesy of the New Castle Sheriff’s Office. The center will also be selling raffle tickets with these prizes:

• first prize, a gun safe, donated by Sportsman’s Warehouse
• second place, a $100 gift card donated by The Hunter’s Den
• third place, $50 gift card donated by Bryansteens Gun and Archery.

Tickets are $5, and can be purchased at the Craig County Child Care Center this week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., or at the child care center’s booth on Saturday.
