Letter to Congress re: Syria Vote

I just sent the following to my congresscritter and to Cantor and Boehner. If it strikes you as useful, feel free to copy all or any part of it for your own communications:

The argument that Congress must approve Obama's plan to act against Syria to preserve America's credibility is based on a false premise - that Obama speaks for the United States. There is no longer any basis to support that contention. Obama is demanding that the country bail him out of his own irresponsible behavior. Even worse, he is demanding that the men and women of our military put their lives on the line to assuage his self-inflicted embarrassment.

And, typical of Democrats, Obama is not giving any consideration to the potential ramifications of inciting a much wider and longer war than he so blithely predicts. The impact of unforeseen consequences is a regular theme for left-wing government plans, and this one will be no different. "My Plan is Perfect. What Could Go Wrong?" is the typical analytical process used by the Left. We Republicans are both smarter and more realistic than that.

Every military operation has a name. If this goes ahead, an apt name would be "Operation I Wrote a Check with my Mouth and Now You Can Cash It with Your Life".

If our government had not been supporting Assad in the early days of the civil war, when the opposition was led by indigenous, western-oriented, citizens who wanted a democracy, we would not be at this point today. But back then Hillary Clinton embraced the thug Assad as a "reformer" and our government turned a blind eye to his crimes. Today the Syrian opposition is infiltrated, and soon will be dominated, by Al Qaeda and other violent Islamist groups, and the Syrian people are victims in the crossfire.

Our government seems never to take an opportunity to do the right thing at the right time, and always takes the opportunity to do the wrong thing. One thing for sure, it certainly doesn't represent the American people any longer.
I urge you to represent faithfully your constituents, and to remember the difference between Obama’s political interests and the best interests of the United States. Please join the conservatives in Congress and vote against Obama’s reckless adventure.

I really like the first and last paragraphs. Number 4 has some good stuff in it also.

It might be too late though as it seems Boehner and Cantor have already come to a decision to back Comrade Barry's "shucks and awww" effort.

Wrote my congresscritter this letter. Some of changed a bit for each person (ex forbes is not the presidents' friend).

Dear Senator Warner,

Eleven years ago 3,000+ people, most of them civilians, lost their lives one sunny summer day. The group that perpetrated that horrendous crime was Al Queda. Al Queda is not our friend. They are not our ally. Dictators are bad, but they did not attack us 11 years ago. Al Queda did. I see no reason to help people that will just as soon as we give them assistance turn on us.

Going to war is a serious thing. Young men and young women will die in the effort. It is a terrible thing that chemical weapons have been used and it should be condemned. Perhaps the UN should do something about it. We have just spent 10 years sifting sand in Iraq and Afghanistan. When we went into Iraq it was after years of provocation and disregard of the treaty that ended the first gulf war and with the certain knowledge that he had used chemical weapons on his own people. Even so I am not certain at all that it was worth it in the end. This is Iraq only MUCH worse.

We should not enter the fray. We should not irritate Russia for no good reason. We should not defend Islamic terrorists. We should not defend despots. We gain nothing from attacking and stand to lose much in the fight.

I know the president is your friend, and I respect that. Please don't make our soldiers pay the check his thoughtless mouth wrote.
