I just found this site. Surprised I had not seen it before.
I've lived in northern VA for over 20 years. I moved here with my family over 20 years ago. I didn't know much about guns back then, but shortly after I moved here a co-worker friend and I went to Gilbert's one night and rented every gun they had to see what I liked. That was a fun night. I still have the gen 2 Glock 17 I bought shortly after that.
I applied for a concealed weapon permit around 1993 or so, but way back then, those of us unlucky enough to live in Fairfax County had no chance of actually getting a permit. I still remember going in to an office building by the courthouse in Fairfax City for an interview with a detective or some other police officer to justify why I needed a permit. Then he told me that my application would surely be denied. Shortly after that, I heard of NVCDL (predecessor to VCDL), and at the same time there was a strong move to reform the CCW law, which was successful in 1995 (if I remember correctly). I got my permit that summer, but Fairfax County still tried to make it harder than it had to be, and I think the permit was only good for a year or two back then.
Anyway, happy to be here!

Welcome! Yup, things have necome better since then. Does ffx city still require the Chief of Police approval for purchases in city limits?

I'm not sure because I live in the county, not the city. Fairfax County court is located in Fairfax City, which is why I have to go to Fairfax City to get my permit.GeneFrenkle wrote:Welcome! For a while, Fairfax County had a special 3 or 5 day wait for handguns, which is why I bought my first couple of handguns at the Dale City gun show. Maybe that's what you're referring to?

Back in 2000 or so, there was a small gunshop near 236 and 123. The first (and only) time I bought in Fairfax, there was the 5 day waiting period and Chief of Police approval which included a separate background check.

I'm glad we didn't have to go through that here in Hampton Roads.....I believe since I got mine 3 years ago, they've done away with the fingerprint requirement too.....if you were in the military, they assume you've had some form of handgun training and a DD214 suffices for the course requirement.....I don't think that's adequate for some folks that just pushed paper for their time in. The CCW permit did take a month or so to receive after providing all documentation.
