Pistol stolen

Just found out that my wife's pistol was stolen. It's a Springfield XD subcompact 9mm serial #XD208135.

When looking through the case for the paper work, I found an envelope with a spent shell casing. Is there a database that the government keeps?

Report it to the police they record it, iirc. Hope she's ok.

Whew! Better that than the alternative! Glad things are ok. No database except for serial numbers of stolen guns that I'm aware of in VA. Might want to take a picture of it and keep a record of the s/n in a safety deposit box or something.

Some states required turning that into the police for their database. Generally, it's BS as it's highly unreliable form of identification. VA doesn't require it as VA generally doesn't make it a habit of harassing its citizens.

Some states require those for registration, although the only one I know of that actually does that is MD.

A little from column A, a little from column B. Some manufacturers test fire EVERY GUN, sometimes with proof loads, and send the fired cases along with them. I know every GLOCK and HK comes with one. Other manufacturers generate fired shell casings for states like MD that have a "database".

These databases do nothing, have never helped solve any crime, and just serve as a PITA for MD gun dealers and pistol purchasers.

"Picture of it" refers to the gun as well as serial number on the gun, with a record of the serial number itself with model. Sure it's nice to have thetest fire casing, but imo it has no value in VA. Shoving a steel rod down the bbl or into the chamber can change the markings on brass and bullet if hard enough, from what I understand.

The Firearms coverage from my home insurance as well as the supplement insurance from the NRA doesnt require serial registration

re insurance, go thru some examples with your insurance company before you blindly pay the premium. some 25 years ago i had a new and unfired rifle stolen from my home and the insurance company wanted to 'depreciate' it significantly. gun safe is my insurance now.
