got new phone. need rooting advice.

Post by SHMIV »

So, I've got a Galaxy S3, on Boost Mobile. From the research that I've done, it looks like a rootable device. However, I figured that I would ask some of the techno-gurus here about it before I started fooling with the programming on this stupidly expensive phone.

I found a relatively simple way to go about it, using a computer with a Linux based software, which is useful, as that's what my current road computer runs on. Anyone had experience with this?

Also, I found a command terminal app. Could one possibly gain root access directly with such an app?

Thanks, Rick. I had, in fact, Googled it already. There seems to be several ways to go about it, some of which appeared hazardous to the phone. Thus, I am asking the trusted VGOF tecno-squad.

Its been a long time since I bothered to root something but IIRC pretty much all rooting runs a risk of bricking your phones. Doesn't happen often but it can.

It's basically replacing the operating system to remove the limitations the OEM put in place.

In laymans terms, and the way that I understand it, cell providers put blocks in the phones programming, similar in concept to parental controls on teenager's computer. Rooting the phone, or gaining root access, gives you complete administrative control of the device.

There are many reasons to do this. In my case, I want to use my phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. In an extreme case, one may see fit install a completely different operating system on their phone.

Anytime you root you have the potential to brick the phone. Luckily, samsungs are very root friendly. Ive had three android phones now over the years and Rooted and rom'ed all of them.

Motos usually have a locked bootloader and that adds an extra step and extra chance to brick it.

If you are comfortable with linux, then that is the failsafe way to go. Some people have even made one touch root programs for popular phones.

Id suggest browsing the xda dev forums and the rootzwiki forums. You will find a wealth of information.

The Galaxy's are NEAR impossible to kill by rooting, remember removing root access is something the carrier does, not something that was designed to be by the Android OS. You can root a Galaxy in about 15min. I won't have a non-rooted device. This is the tutorial I used to do mine. I also run a custom ROM for the added perks like no CarrierIQ (spying) free tethering, etc.

As long as your running a .deb based (Debian, Ubuntu, mint etc) distro this should work for you. If you need help let me know.
