Military dependent and firearm purchases (TX DL)

Post by gln305 »

I wanted to do some research concerning buying a firearm in VA being that I am a military dependent and I have a TX DL. My wife is the active duty member and her orders do show me on them. I would assume I need to get a VA DL and that will be the easy route. Are there any other options? I'm not quite sure of requirements concerning me having a VA DL in my situation either. Any input would be great.

You will need two forms of ID that show you are a VA resident, though there may be some consideration due to being a military family member. I usually use my VA DL and voter's registration card.

If your name is on your wife's PCS orders, then it may be that you don't need to get a VA driver's license and you may fall under the same requirements as your spouse. Though I don't know that for certain.

An Active Duty military member can present PCS orders and military ID to purchase in the state identified in the orders. Not sure if that transfers to dependents or not.

You'll have to show still 2 forms of ID and show that your a resident of VA (any bill to your VA apartment/house, whatever). Then when you go to the DMV they'll practically hand your VA license once you take the vision test.

BTW - I'm military too, my mom works for the DMV, and I'm gonna have to do the same for my wife. If they tell you anything different then In not sure what that particular DMV's problem is.

Thanks for the info, looks like I need to take as much with me as I can. Bills are no problem, plenty of those coming in LOL. Copy of the orders is easy and I have a Military ID as well. I'll post here when I decide to give it a try and let you know what the outcome is. Thanks again!

It is very easy for Military members and spouses to purchase firearms in VA. And you can always just have your wife make the purchase for you if you do not want to get a VA drivers license.
