What guns shoot 22 WMR?
What guns shoot 22 WMR?
See a lot of this ammo on shelves and am considering stocking up and buying a firearm that shoots it. Only been able to find a few guns that actually shoot it though. a couple of revolvers and some bolt action rifles. Is that about it for these rounds? If this is the case I may still bite the bullet for the wife, she seems to prefer a revolver for it's simplicity and I can find a cheap left hand bolt action rifle for her on line as well.

I'm not much of a Wikipedia fan, but they do a fair job on this one:

Savage bolt actions; Ruger revolvers, Taurus revolvers; Ruger bolt actions; Anshutz, IIRC, etc.

Such an oddity. Yet, plenty of ammo still available. Anybody else thinking of using it or already does?

Kel-Tec PMR-30.... IF you can find one. I am looking and considering. If I found one, I would buy.

I find that with my .22WMR I rarely use the conversion and instead shoot the .22LR. It's just cheaper and for most things it doesn't matter. However, if I were hunting small game then .22WMR has more energy and typically is loaded with much higher quality bullets (e.g. Hornady V-Max). When normal prices return, it's a good deal more expensive than .22LR.DryBones wrote:Such an oddity. Yet, plenty of ammo still available. Anybody else thinking of using it or already does?

Heritage Arms has a nice SA revolver that comes in .22lr and magnum. My wife loves to shoot it.

Revolvers are popular (mines a Ruger) because you can simply change out the cylinder.moss20 wrote:Heritage Arms has a nice SA revolver that comes in .22lr and magnum. My wife loves to shoot it.

Re: What guns shoot 22 WMR?
I am lucky enough to have a Ruger 10/22M which shoots the .22WMR, not too many around these days! I also have a Winchester Model 255, a lever-action (not the Western Cowboy style) that shoots the round, even more rare !
Saw a fellow advertising a Model 255 in the local Trading Post a week or two back, think he was asking about $300 or so, since I already had one, I didn't pursue it any further.
I am a great fan of the caliber, also have a Savage bolt-action (left-handed) and a Savage Model 24 Over/under .22WMR over 20 gauge shotgun.
Recently sold a Savage bolt-action (right-handed) because the bold was on the wrong side!

When my father passed away I got his S&W model 48 .22lr/.22mag K frame revolver. I used it to do most of my NRA pistol bullseye quals. in .22lr mode.
I've since passed it down the line to my oldest daughter.
She keeps it with her AR15, shotgun, 30-30, and .38 spec.

Re: What guns shoot 22 WMR?
it sits at an odd place in the power curve. 2-3x more power than 22LR... but only if it comes from a rifle. Most pistols chambered for 22mag, don't give much of a boost vs 22LR. That power jump makes it almost too much for small game, but no where near enough (legally) for medium game.DryBones wrote:Such an oddity. Yet, plenty of ammo still available. The cost is quite high vs .22, its not a cheap plinker. When normal ammo pricing was available a box of 22 mag was pushing $10/50... I can reload .223 for that price... or buy wolf steel case for a few cents more per round.
I used it a bunch for groundhog hunting, still use it some for squirrels... but more because its a rifle that I like, more than the cartridge. Ruger 77/22M.

American Rifleman had a good article 2 months ago on 22 magnums for defense. It has some good data on modern ammo from different barrel lengths.

Yes, That was a great article...I have always loved the .22 Mag. But I love everything that has MAG. attached to it. I have shot .22 Mag. for years. I started Ground Hog Hunting with a Winchester .22 Mag. I still have a Ruger .22/.22mag. Revolver that I carried when I was Trapping. I also have a Newer Ruger .22mag. I have a Henry Golden Boy .22 Mag. that I love to take to the Range. My Wife Loves to shoot our Rossi .22/.22 Mag. Revolver Rifle. There's a lot of options for the >22 Mag. Caliber !TallEd wrote:American Rifleman had a good article 2 months ago on 22 magnums for defense. It has some good data on modern ammo from different barrel lengths.
