Tiny Georgia city faces off against national gun control group over mandatory gun ownership

ATLANTA — A tiny Georgia city and a national gun control group are facing off in a legal battle over a city ordinance requiring gun ownership, with the constitutionality of the law and broader messages about gun rights taking center stage.

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence in May filed a federal lawsuit against Nelson, a city of roughly 1,300 residents about 50 miles north of Atlanta, saying a recently adopted ordinance requiring heads of household to own a gun and ammunition is unconstitutional.

As much as I'm for an individual's right to bear arms, I'm not for government mandates requiring ownership. I think the city might lose this case, but in light of the Obamacare ruling, maybe not following the mandate could just be considered a "tax".

Kennesaw left enough loopholes in that law so that anyone who wished to be exempt from it could be. The law was always intended to be more of a political statement, rather than something to be enforced. And, the crime rate did drop after it's enactment.

I know everyone uses Kennesaw as an example, and I myself wouldn't mind living there, but our laws should not be designed to be used as political statements. Whether the law is enforced or not is irrelevant, but if it's not enforced it's another reason not to have the law. And as much as I want to believe the crime rate dropped in Kennesaw after enacting the law, crime has been declining nationwide since the law was enacted decades ago. Correlation does not imply causation.
