1. VCDL VICTORY! Petersburg Circuit Court Clerk caves before Writ of Mandamus case heard!
**********************************************************
After VCDL had a petition for a Writ of Mandamus issued against her, I have just received word that the Circuit Court Clerk of Petersburg, Ms. Braxton, has sent a letter to our attorney indicating that she is going to follow Virginia law on issuing CHPs! She will now be accepting renewals through the mail and will ask for only one check for $50 total.
Looks like Ms. Braxton's legal council told her that she was going to lose when the Virginia Supreme Court ruled on the case.
I can't believe it went this far, quite frankly. But we fixed the problem.
TRUST BUT VERIFY
VCDL is now waiting to see if member Michael McNeill, who has reapplied for his CHP via the mail, gets his permit issued.
If you are a Petersburg CHP holder, or know one, keep us posted as to how your renewals through the mail are processed.

Here was some coverage of the case (written before the clerk backed down):
From nbc12.com: http://tinyurl.com/mbm4bz8
PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -
A Petersburg man is taking the city's Circuit Court Clerk to the Virginia
Supreme Court over how gun permits are handled.
Petersburg Circuit Court Clerk Shalva Braxton is accused of mishandling
gun permits, and one man says he's being forced to jump through hoops to
carry his own gun.
Michael McNeill proudly flies his "Don't Tread on Me" flag as he fights
Petersburg's Circuit Court Clerk to carry his concealed handgun. The Virginia
Citizens Defense League backs McNeill and says it's trying to change how
Braxton issues gun permits.
In a petition for to the Virginia Supreme Court, McNeill writes he was not
allowed to renew his concealed handgun permit through the mail. Instead,
Braxton asked for him to take his application to the Petersburg Police
Department for a background check. Then, he was asked to bring the application
to the Circuit Court's office.
McNeill asserts the requests are a violation of Virginia law. According to
Virginia statute 18.2-308, a person "shall not be required to appear in
person... and an application may be submitted via the United States mail."
The background check section of the Petersburg concealed handgun
application does not state if applicants need to bring the document to police in
person.
Braxton's lawyers contend it's not a big deal for McNeill to go to the
police department. But McNeill asserts, the extra legwork is Braxton's job,
and his permit is being held up by bureaucracy.
A court date for the matter has not yet been determined.

4. VCDL to have booth at Trader Jerry's Customer Appreciation Day
**********************************************************
VCDL will have a table at Trader Jerry's Customer Appreciation days from Friday, June 14 through Saturday, June 15.
Trader Jerry's is located at 724 4th Street, Salem VA. Hours will be 10 AM--6 PM.
Our table will be inside the store. We will only need TWO helpers per shift, due to space limitations.
Helper shifts will be 10 AM--2 PM; and 2 PM--6 PM each day. We would like one additional helper to work outside, passing out stickers each shift.
There will be several outside events during both days to draw the customers.
VCDL WILL have some sort of drawing to raise funds at this event. Please help us support businesses, like Trader Jerry's, that support VCDL!
Contact: al@vcdl.org to sign up to assist.

6. Staples bans gun dealers from contest, backs off quickly
**********************************************************
Staples is running a promotion where they have excluded gun dealers or gun manufacturers from participating. Basically they were lumped in with drug dealers and breweries.
Before I had a chance to get the word out, Staples posted on their web site that they are changing their policy so that future promotions will not exclude such legitimate small businesses.
We'll be watching to see what happens in the future. (We have had no reports of any of the Stapes stores in Virginia being gun-unfriendly.)
**********************************************************
7. VCDL President to speak at Roanoke City Republican Committee on June 19th
**********************************************************
I will be speaking on VCDL's 2014 legislative agenda at the Roanoke City Republican Committee. The meeting is open to the public and is on June 19th at 6:30 PM at:

Roanoke VA 24011
**********************************************************
8. VCDL President to speak at Shenandoah Valley Tea Party meeting on June 20th
**********************************************************
I've been invited to speak on gun control and VCDL at the Shenandoah Valley Tea Party meeting is Thursday, June 20th. The meeting is held at:
VFW Post 2216
212 Frontier Drive
Staunton Va 24401
The meeting begins at 6:30 PM and I will speak around 7:15.
The meeting is open to the public, so come on out! It is a good chance to meet some of the folks in a local Tea Party group.
**********************************************************
9. VA Lt. Governor Candidate Northam calls for more gun control
**********************************************************
His video starts out with Senator Northam (who is in a primary running for Lt. Governor on the Democrat ticket) saying that he "knows guns," then he proceeds to show he doesn't by talking about banning "clips" instead of "magazines."
If you are going to ban something, at least know what it is you are trying to ban!
Duct taping your head is recommended before watching his video in the link below. All the usual feel-good, do-nothing, gun-control baloney.

10. Corrections to Update item #9 on 5/21/13
**********************************************************
Two members have contacted me reference item #9 from 5/21/13, where member Craig Faunce was questioning assault weapons having ever been used by a terrorists on U.S. soil.
From Alan Wenger:
"The item says 'Actually, there have been at least 77,000 instances (felons purchasing guns) of this since NICS came to be. The FBI has prosecuted about 75 of those instances.'
That isn't a correct statement; rather, there have been 'at least 77,000 instances' of felons ATTEMPTING to purchase guns but being denied by the NICS check. The distinction is a big one."
Kev der Kinderen sent this:
"Twenty years ago [an 'assault weapon' was used in a terrorist attack in the U.S.] - 1993:

11. Two more Updates coming this week!
**********************************************************
The number of articles on guns continues to soar and I'm way behind on getting them to you. I wanted to spread them out, but I have to get caught up. So, there will be **at least two** VCDL Updates coming this week. Then we should be caught up and the information in the Updates will be more timely.
Just wanted to give you guys a "heads up!"
