I am a new transplant to VA from Los Angeles, CA. Naturally, the first thing I do now that I am free, is apply for my VA CHP. My process consisted of taking my class (not online... took Historic Firearms Corp CHP class at a gun show) and as soon as i had my VA drivers license, I went to the circuit court clerk to apply in Chesterfield Co. They couldn't have been nicer at this courthouse. They even helped me fill out a new app since the one I downloaded was the 2010 version, not 2012. All said and done, I was out the door in 20 minutes. Would have been 5 if my forms were current. My CHP was applied for on 2-11. The clerk did say that CHP's in this county are taking the full 45 days since quite a few people have applied recently. Now comes the wait.
I cannot stress enough that everyone that has lived here in VA should cherish their good fortune of freedom, fight fiercely against anyone trying to even *touch* their 2A rights and encourage everyone they see to get involved. I have seen what the alternative is... and its not pretty. I am so happy to be finally free that I have been experiencing quite a bit of "culture shock". Instead of being treated with suspicion and disdain, I am welcomed. Its a grand (and weird) feeling.
Friends, don't get complacent... it can happen here too. If you let it...

To help prevent it from happening here, communicate with your representatives encouraging them to vote pro-freedom. Join VCDL, too. They are a great organization.

And if Bruce Dickinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell!
Re: My CHP process
I just received mine in exactly two weeks. I was surprised how easy the process was. I'm coming from Arkansas, where 2 fingerprint cards were required and they took the picture off of your driver's license and put it on the concealed permit. The training requirement is more stringent there, as well. I will miss the Arkansas reciprocity though, as it is one of the best states wrt reciprocity.

While you wait for your permit, feel free to OC. No sense going around unarmed.

Welcome to the the neighborhood! Here in the land of the People we believe in empowering individuals to grow, succeed, and "secure themselves and their posterity". I came from Rhode Island about 15 years ago. I can relate to the feeling of escaping from my home town.
I my personal experience, after living in several states and Commonwealth's in this great country, Virginia is by-far one of the best places to start and own a business, have a family, and enjoy the world we've been blessed to be born to.
Anyway, glad you are having a good experience. Like the folks before me stated, be active in the culture and let the politicians know where you stand. They need to do what we say, and if we never tell them, the bleeding hearts will.

CHP wait report: Chesterfield County. I received mine in the mail today (day 44). Started process on 2-12... CHP says it was issued on 3-14; so it took them 2 weeks just to mail it.

Re: My CHP process
Sounds about right. Keep in mind, they had a judge adjudicate your request in formal court proceedings. The day the judge says "yes" is the issue date. From there the clerk has to process it and notify the VA State police in writing that the permit has been issued. Once all that is done, a permit print and mail request gets processed. I'm shocked it only took two weeks the way government works. (not meant in a bad way... just lots of red tape.)
