Jacket core separation

Post by DerBiermeister »

I visited my local gun shop yesterday to buy another mag for my M&P Shield (.40 cal). I like having 3 mags for each gun I own. But I digress -- what I want to know is this:

As I will be firing at least one box of my Self Defense Ammo (Gold Dot 155 gr) through my gun, I also decided to pick up another box. The main guy in the store waited on me. He said that since my Shield has a short barrel (3.1"), I really ought to be using a higher grain round to reduce the muzzel velocity. So he grabs a box of Remington Golden Saber S&W 180 gr. This cartridge uses a brass jacket instead of copper and is NOT bonded.

When I got home, I decided to research this ammo.

I also checked a bunch of other websites and forums and they all had the same separation problem. However, there were some comments that this can actually be a GOOD THING if actually shooting to bring down a dude as the separation will probably cause a lot more damage in the person.

Your thoughts? Are any of you familiar with this ammo? Also, for your short barrel 40s, what load do YOU use?
PROST!

I run golden saber thru revolvers, but not autos.

Case seperation reduces the penetration rate. Hence Revolvers (IE: .357, and .45 LC), hotter rounds, with case seperation will have the effect you described, but normal auto rounds (Note +P excluded) rarely have that kind of heat.

I run 185 grain cor-bon thru my beretta, handed some rounds to my brother for his fnh compact and they wouldnt feed at all. Find what feeds your gun best and stay with it.
