Sorry, one last thing, the NRA range seems to be doing a decent job of keeping ammunition on the shelves at least, when I spoke with them last they were allowing 3 boxes go per customer@ $18.50 a box of 50 rounds of 9mm, but they had it. They said distributors were raising their prices so they had no choice but it sounded like using the range was not a requirment. Leesburg Walmart has not had a single box of 9, .40S&W, .45ACP, .380 or anything else that could get stuffed into a handgun in my last 15 trips. They're peeling off the stickers and tossing them. Anywhere better to look? Is this just going to get worse and worse. Handguns seem to be approaching MSRP more as well and Buds can't even keep stuff in stock...is it time to skip a handgun and buy a shotgun?

Can anyone recommend a good handgun caliber given that availability is such an issue? Screw stopping power, I'm talking buying power. I always thought my 9mm would see me through world war tres, a zombie invasion and the apocolypse. Now it sounds like it doesn't matter. I wan't a new handgun and this all sounds pretty bleak. I'll make sure it's a different caliber that's for darn sure, I'm not talking about power here- anyone recommend .40 S&W vs. .45 ACP?

9mm has immense quantities which are produced, but it also is hugely popular. This is a short term shortage. If if persists, there will be an economic incentive to increase production. However, companies won't do that until they are sure it's not a spike in sales. You have to size you company for average sales, not peak demand.
9mm is still an excellent choice, but regardless of the caliber you will have to shop around and buy a large lot when you do find it. Just like hurricane season, if you wait to buy what you need until right before the storm...good luck.

I have been trying to get another box or two of .45 ACP so I can sight in my 1911. I have a Remington R1 and am fitting retro style sights to it, but haven't scraped together enough ammo to start sighting in. I tried Dick's today and found no .45 ACP, though I was able to buy 3 boxes of .38 Special for my revolvers. All they had was Remington .38, which seems really dirty ammo to me, but I bought it given the present situation with supply. It's a sad state when law abiding people are driven to panic demand by their own government.
I picked up three more boxes at wal-mart of .22LR CCI 325 Copperplated.
It's OUT there, but they're not stocking just in the mornings anymore... they got tired of the early risers hitting it fast, and furious, leaving nothing for anyone else. So they're breaking up the "band" by stocking various calibers at various times now.
I'm not one for limitations, or keeping anyone from buying ANYTHING, but I can appreciate finding ammo when I can.

I don't like limitations either, but that's what happens when you have regulations that prevents rising and falling prices based on supply and demand even though as individual sellers that is exactly the system we use to sell goods through Craigslist or auction websites. It's interesting that the more regulations you have, the more regulations you need to keep that system going. If Walmart wasn't restricted in its pricing, not only would it have not as empty shelves but it also wouldn't need the stupid 3 box limit either.

+1
Charge more and the people who actually need it will still buy it and those are buying just because it's there won't. Supply and demand balance at a price (although this is changing all the time) and suddenly there isn't a shortage any more. Shortages only exist when the price isn't free to self-regulate. It's a thing of beauty when allowed to work, but so few people understand the price system they get in it's way and complain when it's allowed to work.

Ammo shortage is bad, but it could be worse. Look at what is happening around: Greeks are fighting for food (http://www.shtfplan.com/headline-news/w ... e_02072013), Argentina is freezing prices and this always goes to food shortage, Venezuela devalue currency by 46% and people run around to buy food.

I remember the ammo shortage 4 yrs. ago. I had plenty then to keep shooting when ever I wanted because I always replace ammo as I shoot. Since then I always make it a point to buy ammo when I see it.I also buy ammo like 9mm , .45 acp , .40 s&w and .45/70 and do not have a gun to shoot them. Some day I probably will. I did just order a 9mm barrel for my Bond Arms Derringer , should get it this week. I have plenty 9mm ammo and I will waste no time running a couple rds. through it.
