Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
Finally got to shoot my 10/22 today. Black stock w/SS barrel. Shot about 400 rds. and it preformed great. The 10 rd. mag. is very slow to load and shoot. My buddy was also shooting his Ruger , he had some 25 rd. mags. A lot more fun to shoot. I ordered 6 25 rd. Mags. and also 2 -50 rd. Drums...I don't have any idea when they will arrive .I hope the drums work good. If anybody has any experience with the Drums from Black Dog I would be interested in hearing about it. I also am thinking about accessories needed , Scope a must ! Then some trigger work and an extended Mag. lever.

And if Bruce Dickinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell!

MidwayUSA has the 25 round Butler Creek steel lips magazines as backorderable - I placed my order 2 weeks ago and it shipped yesterday.
The 50 round drums are less than reliable, but when they work they're great.
The Volquartsen target hammer & springs kit is also highly recommended. Mine has about a 2.5 lb trigger pull now!
Enjoy your 10/22.

Shooting fast might be fun, but shooting accurately is better. As Jeff Cooper said, you can't miss fast enough to win the fight.
I don't know what you mean about the 10-rd mags being "slow to shoot". To me they work just fine. It is nice to be able to load 25, though.
Depending on how far out you want to shoot, you might try Tech-Sights instead of a scope - much less expensive. Out to 50 yards they are plenty accurate unless you have really bad eyes and need the magnification.

+1 on the tech sights. The front sight pin can loosen up, so a litte bit of loctite on the retaining screw helps.

Try and get a hold of the factory bx25 mags, they are top shelf.
I hope you have better luck than I did with the drums. I won't ever try them again.

Yes, the bx25 mags. are great....I have 4 now and are very easy to load and use. I also have 9 - 10 rd. factory mags. that work very good as well. I ended up giving my brother in law the Drum Mag. ....I didn't like the look on my 10/22. The 25 and 10 round mags. work just fine for me.TheWhiteBuffalo wrote:Try and get a hold of the factory bx25 mags, they are top shelf.

Order BX25's directly from Ruger and you won't get reamed on the price. They allow backorders.

I have 4 that my Gun Dealer Buddy had for $28 each. 2 were used and 2 are new. He is working on getting a few more for me. He is always getting all kinds of accessories on trade-ins. Another friend of mine does have some on back order from Ruger !

Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
500 perhaps, not 1000. You can expect to fire 100-150 rounds on Day 1 (including the Redcoats), which is heavy on instruction, and 40 rounds per AQT target plus 26 rounds on Redcoats on Day 2. The most AQTs I have done in a day were 8, so that's 320 rounds + 150 + 26 = 496.
Appleseed is working on some alternative instruction methods to help accommodate the ammo shortage.
The first scheduled clinic this year is April 20-21, so there is time to find ammo.

Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
I have been to an Appleseed Shoot . I did not shoot at that event. A friend of mine has shot at several of these.
Tomorrow morning we ( 3 buddies and myself ) are going to our Land in Sussex Co. to shoot our .22's and .22 mags. I may even take my Henry .17 HMR. We go twice a month and only shoot Rim fires . We all have been hoarding ammo so I hope we can continue for awhile.

Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
I installed a Tasco Red Dot from Walmart ($40.00 ) Saturday....We shot about 300 rds. Sunday and 200 rds today. The Red Dot was really worth the money...A lot more fun with the scope and the 25 rd. Mags. Going to Colonial Academy tomorrow with a couple friends. We have been shooting our .22's a lot ...Glad we have been hoarding ammo for the last few years.I have a couple other accessories for the 10/22 ...Just haven't had time to install yet.
Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
Yeah 10/22's are a lot of fun. As long as the weather is decent I usually shoot my Charger a few times a week. Even in it's pistol form I have no problem hitting 100 yard 8" wide steel with a 1x red dot.

Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
I was looking at a Charger last summer. Now I wish I had bought it. We went out and shot our .22's today. 4 of us only shot about 500 rds. We were shooting outdoors and man was it cold. We probably burned a cord of firewood.Empire wrote:Yeah 10/22's are a lot of fun. As long as the weather is decent I usually shoot my Charger a few times a week. Still a lot of fun , just will be glad when it warms up.

Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
I had to go to South Hill this morning to a friends house, who just happens to have 110 acres. Also has a great 100 yd. range. I took my 10/22 and he was shooting his new 10/22 Target.A great shooting Rifle. I really enjoy the Red Dot Scope , I 'm glad I went with it .....We were shooting golf balls at 50 yds. and tennis balls at 75 yds. We both shot about 300 rds. Then it started snowing ! I thought it was Spring. I guess it will warm up soon.

Re: Ruger 10/22 1st Time Shooting
The wife and I took our 10/22 and 10/22 Takedown and our 2-15/22 M&P's out for a little plinking today. We have 33 - 25 rd. mags. that were already loaded...We ate through 555 rds. in about 2 hrs. but had a great time . This was the first time we have shot in awhile ...Even though I haven't found any .22 lately to replace what we shot it was nice to get outside and shoot some!
