FiremanBob wrote:As I said in my original post on this topic, the "establishment" Republicans are as bad as the Democrats. The Republicans who would nominate Bob Dole and GW Bush are not my Republicans. My alliances are with the genuinely conservative wing of the party, which is attempting to rescue it rather than going nuclear with a third party formation. A thread on what it takes to pull that off would be interesting.
There have been some attempts on here at that, notably and surprisingly by folks like Mindflayer and Kruetz and CowboyT and others that are immediately dismissed as useless, or even worse, as liberals. I don't see any point in trying to reform the Republican party to be conservatives, and I don't see any point in trying to argue that everybody is wrong if they are not a conservative in agreement with you. The mostly likely future may well be a multi-party system that has to form coalitions to govern. Real conservatives get to be one of those parties....how do they need to frame themselves so as to encourage coalitions? Certainly not by driving away anyone who disagrees with them, but rather by finding the common ground. Hey, everyone wants freedom (from regulation, to do what they want, whatever), but they clearly define it differently.

While we are at it, I do not understand the attitude on this forum that says everyone who is a democrat and/or lives in a city is a "taker" and is mooching off the real Americans. That's not just wrong, it drives people away.

You and Shotgunblast both argue eloquently and intelligently, even though you have different value systems. CoyboyT is another who speaks clearly and from his heart, but the responses to him are childish. There are others that I enjoy reading -- Mamabear, Mindflayer, a few others -- because they are people who speak with passion but are clearly listening and thinking at the same time. That is the ingredient for useful discourse.

But there are others on here who are so far over the top that they have become almost scary in their inability to put cogent thoughts together, so they turn to ranting, denigrating, quoting irrelevant scripture, highly inflammatory statements, things that were they in a bar would cause me to walk out of the room for fear of a fistfight breaking out. Schoolboy stuff. Pompous. They are going to Pi$$ all over me for saying this....it's gonna be fun to watch. But they'll make my point for me.

I'm probably older than most of the folks on this board, and I've NEVER seen such attitudes. Yes, I worry about this country, but it is because of the bias and invective and disrespect toward people not like them that I worry.

Soooo let me understand.

Those with whom you agree, are "eloquent", and "speaking from the heart", but those who have a strong opinion opposing your view point are "childish", "inflammatory", and "scary", and quoting "scripture" which you deem irrelevant.

AH! What wisdom you must possess to sit upon so high, and pass judgement on we lil' forum rednecks whom you think unintelligent.

But it harkens back to a reason I do not fight on the internet

Because "arguing" on the internet is like winning the Special Olympics, even if you win? You're still "special".

As to "bar fights", you claim to be older, but I cannot see anything said on these forums causing a fist fight to break out.

Sure Cowboy, and I go at it like two dogs on a pork chop. We disagree on quite a few things, but I don't hate him. And I don't wish violence on him. Same goes for the rest.

My views are MY VIEWS! You don't have to like them, but don't act holier than thou about YOUR views!

And on that note? God bless yer heart Turnip!

Time and further disenchantment will inevitably lead to this. Its not just Libertarian leaning Republicans, the more liberal Democrats are bitching about the mainstream Democrat party as being too moderate as well. Sooner or later these vocal subgroups will strike out on their own.

Please remember we live in a republic, not a democracy. The two party system in which we get to pick those to represent us just doesn't serve a country of over 300,000,000 very well anymore.

I agree with you Kreutz. Eventually, we need to SPLIT parties like they did MA BELL!

Remove the (R), and (D) behind the names on ballots, and MAKE people RESEARCH those running for office.

I never upheld Romney,or Allen, flat out thought they were a bad choice. However, my dislike for the current Long legged Liar in Chief, and the "New" Senator "Timmy", over rode ALL those dislikes.

Seriously, Kaine, and Obama just do not impress me, or represent my views whatsoever. I'm lost until 2014/2016. But with the Carpetbaggers in this state, i'm sure Mark Warner will retain the seat.

Currently, other states are in review for possible relocation. I cannot stomach the people who have taken over my dear Commonwealth.

I doubt that....VA has a history of sticking our thumb in the eye of the current president. Clinton got us in VA George Allen and the fellow that came after that I can never remember the name to, George Bush got us Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. Obama got us McDonnell, I think it is unlikely that there will be such high democrat turnout for the GOV race. Obama, the source of their enthusiasm and devotion is not on the ticket.

I will again quote George Washington:
The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge natural to party dissention, which in different ages & countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders & miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security & repose in the absolute power of an Individual: and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.
Sound familiar? People siding with one side or another and becoming rabid fanatics of their chosen side?
