Marlin. Similar design to the rossi, but a slightly higher build quality in my eye.

In a lever carbine I'm a bit preference to the 44 spl/mag vs the 38/357. I like the energey level better, and like the projectile selection in the 44 family more than what I find in the .357 bores.

If you are going to carry rifle weight it makes sense to carry a more powerful cartridge. However, .357Mag does make a lot of sense (SHTF) if you carry it in a handgun (ammo commonality).

An older Marlin 1894 is the perfect solution.

Either the Marlin or the Henry are good choices, but don't ignore the Rossi leverguns, either. I've spent some quality time with one of those recently, and after running the action a bunch of times to smooth it out, it's proved to be a good rifle. If you ever want optics for it, it's drilled 'n' tapped for a Rossi scout-style (long eye relief) scope mount, like Ruger's Gunsite Scout Rifle. The safety is unobtrusive. The iron sights are of the traditional variety and work well enough. The rifle will shoot clover-leafs at 25 paces with the irons if the shooter does his part.

I didn't expect Rossi/Taurus to be able to produce a quality rifle like this, but they did. Wow...I'm actually recommending--essentially--a Taurus! But when they do it right, they do it right.

BTW, I wish Ruger would bring back their Model 96 levergun series! Man, what a sweet levergun. Ruger needs to do this. Note I didn't say, "I would like for them to do this," but rather Ruger NEEDS to do this. If you can find a Model 96/44 in .44 Magnum at a reasonable price...grab it. But Ruger NEEDS to come out with it again chambered in .38/357, .44, and .45LC/454.

My first High Powered Rifle I ever purchased was a Marlin .35 Lever in 1973. After a few years it started to Jam...Would not eject the spent shell. I also have a Winchester 30-30 Lever that I bought used ...about a year old, it is ok ,but nothing special. I still have them both , but hardly ever shoot them. My favorite Rifle that I have is my Henry .357-.38 Big Boy . I 've killed Deer , Boar and Turkey's with it . It always goes to the Range with me. I shoot everything from Cheap .38 Re-loads to The Best .357 's . Shoots them all great. I just love shooting it ! I also Have Several other Henrys... Big Boy .44 Mag. and a Big Boy .45 LC a Golden Boy .17 HMR and .22 Mag and a .22 LR. My next Henry will be The .45-70. I don't really need it , just want one.
