Question about new gun, first time firing Glock30SF

Hey Guys,

New gun owner and new glock 30SF, first time shooting it today at Blue Ridge. Question about my results. Is it normal to have a lot of residue around the tip? Less than 100 rounds through it, ammo seen in picture. Is this the gun breaking in/oils burning off? Is this caused by the ammo (does it suck)? Is my gun okay? Cleaning routine?

I hear that while Winchester white box ammo is quality ammo, it's also dirty.

It's not unusual at all. Some brands/types of ammo are dirtier than others with respect to powder residue so you will see differences. Also, because your Glock 30 has a relatively short barrel for a .45 ACP, you will likely see more muzzle residue than a longer barreled pistol shooting the same ammo as the powder has less barrel length to burn completely and cleanly. The only real detriment I can think of is if it obscures your front sight - especially fiber optic or night sights. Easy fix - just wipe it off.

Thanks for the replies, I've shot the 30 in the past but there was no residue which made me wonder what was going on with this gun. Then again it wasn't the same ammunition, so thanks for the information. And now that we figured out it was the ammuntion, there was one comment saying it's good but dirty. Do others agree that it is a good quality round? I have another box of 100 so I wanted to make sure before I put more through it, and for the future is there another .45ACP round you guys prefer more?

The source document is excellent advice. The standard HST's are king of expansion, but their barrier performance generally lags well behind bonded bullets like the Gold Dots. There still is no one bullet that is best at everything. Yes, Winchester "white box" ammo is good practice ammo, but dirty. I use quite a bit of it because the brass is decent for reloading which isn't true of all practice ammo.

seems like a lot of residue for 100 rounds, but Winchester whitebox has been in my experience quite a bit dirtier than some other brands. Not as bad as the steel case stuff.

Nope, its a glock, replace it immediately

Hmmm how might one clean powder residue.... how about a powder solvent.

Seriously. just a wet patch or two will wipe it right off.

Yeah your gun is just dirty. The cheaper the ammo the dirtier it tends to be. And I'll echo the previous posts on defensive loads. Loads like the Gold Dot, the HST, and the Ranger-T are probably the best loads out there.

First off, congrats on getting an awesome pistol. That's been my EDC for a while now. Though mines not the short frame version. Just the standard frame.

While it'll shoot pretty much any ammo without so much as a hiccup, certain ammo will be dirty. The tennifer finish that glock uses may show it a little more that some lesser finishes. It wipes right off. No worries.

First off, don't let anyone tell you you own an inferior pistol.Glock is the most dependable handgun in the world.I have shot many different types of guns and have been around many different types of guns in various training environments where the guns were run hard all day, and glock always outshines them all when it comes to dependability......as to your question, its the ammo, won't hurt it and its cheap enough to shoot alot of so you won't see money going out the muzzle every time you pull the trigger.

A Glock's nose is always white and powdery after shooting any number rounds of any sort of ammo. Maybe we need to stage a drug intervention

Yeah, anyone who talks down on a glock is either ignorant, or envious. One or the other. Of course some prefer other pistols, but will vouch for the performance of a Glock. Those guys know the deal.
