Live in Virginia, but registered in California

Post by alc12 »

I am currently a college student in Virginia, but a resident of California. My plan is to move back to California in a year and a half, once i graduate, so i don't want to register myself in Virginia. My dad and family live in Texas. I want to get a handgun to have a posses in Virginia. I am under 21 so i know i can only buy one from a private dealer.
What I am wondering is if my dad buys a handgun for me from Texas and I take it back to Virginia will it be legal for me to own it?
If you could provide sections of laws that would be great as well.
Thank you for your help.

No. You can only take possession of a handgun in your own state of residence from a person/business in that state. So you'd have to go to California, buy a handgun THERE, and bring it back to VA.

You CAN, however, buy/receive a rifle or shotgun either in Texas or Virginia (or any other state.)

Because you are under 21 you may not be able to buy or take possession of a firearm in California, unless it is gifted to you by a family member who is a resident of California, check California laws. You are not a resident of Texas, Transfer of a firearm from a Texas resident to a non-resident is a violation of Federal Law. The same Federal law prevents you from buying a gun in Virginia, that and your age. A word of caution, a public forum is not the place to seek legal counsil, you would be well advised to consult an attorney. Good luck.
