If you were waylaid on the road...

Post by FiremanBob »

by a mob of postelection or TEOTWAWKI zombies or a "checkpoint" of similar savages, would you rather have a rifle or a shotgun in your vehicle? My instinct says the AR, but what circumstances would make a shottie preferable?

Spray pattern. Two birds with one shot sorta thing. Also, i'd have alternating shot in the mag tube such as: 2 rds of 00 and then 2 rds of #8 and so on. This way the first two shots will penetrate through the first couple of perps and the next two will spray and deter more perps. Repeat as necessary......

Assuming I didn't already drive into them and theres some distance betwixt us I'd want the rifle for rate of fire, higher magazine capacity, ease of reload, and penetration of people/vehicles. (This assumes we're talking about semi-auto I guess, a bolt action just wouldn't work here).

Closer up the shotgun for the reasons Davasmith specified.

A single'/burst/auto rifle would be best in either case I'd think.

As I sit here pondering this great question watching a re-run of "Have Gun Will Travel" I have to think that there could be many different situations that would need many different options. I think a handgun , short Rifle or Shotgun would be best. I feel very safe with my Judge with 5-00 buck shot on the console and as soon as my CC permit comes I will have my Bond Arms .45 Derringer on me. On Election Day I am going to take delivery on a Mossberg 12 ga. 8 shot 500 CRUISER ....I'm going to name it "MITT". I don't know if I will have it with me all the time...Just another option. :pistol: :pistol: :pistol:

Two words coach gun, short but double barreled. With a wide spread should be good for quick get away. But the best would be keltec's KSG a 12 guage shottie with 16 rounds. :D

Not enough info.

What are the circumstances? Food shortage, rioting over election results, TEOTWAKI?

Am I in the country? the burbs? the city?

What type of vehicle am I in? Whose with me? Are there alternative routes?

Go with knowledge, not just a weapon. If I know riots are occurring ahead of me, I drive around. If I'm in an ambush? A shotgun disperses "luv" in all directions quickly, and can be a psychological as well as physical weapon. Pump Action makes a nice sound, but an autoloading Mossberg or Saiga mag fed can make things "different".

If I'm at a distance from it, and they're blocking the only path, and I'm in my lil' Honda, an AR with my Eotech would be the equalizer, and disperse the crowds. If I'm too close, my compact AK with a 20 round mag can get to play, and take out other vehicles due to the steel core ammo.

Too many variables to make a "This, or That" answer.

Poppy cock. Good day sir, I am Tired of your shananagans, I said good day sir! Op states that your at a checkpoint................this clearly (in my mind) says your in immediate danger as in danger close. See op by me for further directions. Hondas need not apply. My big ole gas guzzling, ass stomping expedition and I have gun will travel. As to in the country or burbs or certain color house?? Does not matter, rules of engagement still apply. Smile god loves you and only the weak die needlessly.

By all means take your "big ole gas guzzling, ass stomping expedition", step in front, and get MOWED down by those SAWs you DID NOT pay attention to on the SIDES of the "checkpoint".

A checkpoint can be seen from a distance. You can decide how to react, and if this is an "Official" checkpoint, or one like the LA Riots, where force multipliers aren't necessary when you can FIND AN DIFFERENT PATH!

G'head! Take your "ego", your gun, and have at it, when they're done toying with you. I'll simply slide by.

Not every fight, requires force, some require alternative thinking.

Just mind games, without enough context.
When was your last time on a checkpoint/roadblock/whatever when you were not at least 20th in line? You're not traveling in desert these days. You can see a problem from at least half a mile.

+1

Firearms, vehicles, etc. are just tools. A sledge hammer can be an excellent tool, just not for fixing a fine Swiss watch. Raming a vehicle barrier, when it's appropriate and done properly, does NOT require a massive 4 ton vehicle. Even the biggest vehicle won't be working for long with a crushed radiator and bumpers are only good for a few MPH. You'll fair a bit better with a brush guard, but only marginally based on those I commonly see (very weak designs/implementations).

Avoid the threat if you can, evade if you must, escape when all else fails. The further you transverse down that chain the lower the odds of surviving.
