Concealed Naming - 3 Choices?

Post by alby »

I'm in the process of obtaining my Concealed Permit. One thing I've noticed is the naming schema
that I've seen used to reference a Concealed Permit. My question is, which name is correct and/or
most used:

a) CCP - Concealed Carry Permit
b) CWP - Concealed Weapon Permit
c) CHP - Concealed Handgun permit

In Virginia, only a handgun can be concealed. That's why, in VA at least, it's officially called a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP).

You are right. In some email back-in-forth's with the NRA, they referred to it as a CCW.

If you took the Basic Pistol/Carry Concealed class here, then you would have
received a certificate upon completion of that class. That certificate can be used
as part of your CCW packet.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I just looked at my permit to make sure. It says "Permit to carry a handgun".
So +1 for CHP :packin:

I think it varies from state to state so if you speak to someone outside of VA they could call it any of the 3 depending on what their state calls it. I think most people know what you mean no matter which you use. CHP seems to be the most correct for VA.

Some states allow for concealing of more than just a handgun (Knives, etc), therefore, they call theirs a Concealed Weapon Permit. Since Virginia's permit only applies to Handguns, then it's a CHP.
