Hint: government control of the means of production

Our Dear Leader, Barack Obama, has always maintained that he's not a socialist and is not in favor of socialism. However, in Roanoke, VA on Saturday, in a campaign speech, he uttered the following statement (among other absurd and inane statements):

"If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."

As a small business owner, I have to say that this statement makes my head explode even more than just about any of the other inane and absurd things I have ever heard spill out of this jackwad's cakehole.

Anyone who can watch and listen to what this guy is saying and doing and then claim that he's not in favor of state socialism simply doesn't understand what the term "state socialism" means.

Except that he didn't say that. At 33:10 of your second video he said "If you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own... If you were successful, someone along the line gave you some help." and then he goes into examples in his "it takes a village to raise a child" theme. And then he concludes with "when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

The "you didn't build that. Someone else made that happen" line was an example of a bridge being built, not your business.

Call all of that socialism if you want. I think it's good examples of it takes a village to raise a child. As another small business owner, I know that I didn't do it all myself. It took help from a lot of people for me to be successful. As Obama said "when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together." Based on my personal experience that's 100% true.

But they have all done their part to obstruct, hinder and disincent (if that's a real word, it's a damned awkward one) my efforts at various times. And even granting all of what you say; that does not by my lights give Obama or any other damned politician or bureaucrat the moral right to confiscate and redistribute the fruit of MY labor. To the extent that others contributed to the cause, they were compensated pursuant to a bargain struck at the time by the parties to the transaction. What Obama is really babbling about here is WHO he's stealing from; not whether.

I agree with this 100%. I haven't received one bit of help from the government in my business (and don't expect any) and regulations do get in the way. I do not believe that taxing the rich will solve any budget problems. That would just make me not want to work as hard to be successful. The government needs to do what we're all doing with our personal and business budgets if we don't hit the numbers -- cut expenses.

I agree with this 100%. I haven't received one bit of help from the government in my business (and don't expect any) and regulations do get in the way. I still think that the best face you can put on it still shows a POTUS who is openly contemptuous, belittling and dismissive toward the nation's small businessman. The feeling is much more than reciprocated. I wouldn't pee down BHO's throat if his guts were on fire.

My small biz ultimately does owe its existence to CMS, since they pay my clients, and DARPA since I work remotely via the internet for them.

If I owned a shipping business I would ultimtely have to thank the interstate system for its existence, etc.

This is basic civics though.

In my view, such things as the internet and interstate highways are a meager, marginal and usually unintended return trickling back to we shortchanged taxpayers on the untold billions that have been confiscated and squandered by the profligate parasites in Washington DC. rather than benefits bestowed by a loving, paternalistic and benevolent federal government as you and BHO seem to be inferring. Granted, whatever I've accumulated I didn't do entirely alone; but anyone who helped got paid according to a mutually agreeable arrangement negotiated in advance. Further, said accumulation was in spite of rather than with the help of the damned government. Anyone working 23 1/2 hours a day, days at a time starting a business diserves respect. They pay for three or four other welfare couch jockies.. and the roads ..with the lions share of taxes they have stolen from them! Nobody pays their way!

For once I really have nothing to disagree with you about on a post of yours; very level headed and correct,save for the fact I wasn't trying to infer (and don't think I did} that the "benefits bestowed by a loving, paternalistic and benevolent federal government as you and BHO seem to be inferring".

The basic truth is a government must provide basic infrastructure and administrative services to:

1) As you said make us think we're getting more for our tax dollars than we ever will.

2) Government cannot exist/maintain power without stability, which comes from a functional infrastructure.

3) Maintain control over those roads, servers, and power lines, which in turn means control over the people that depend on them.

4) And as always, engage in nepotism and cronyism in the awarding of the contracts to build and maintains all the infrastructure goodies to maintain the delicate balance of screwing the taxpayers while getting kickbacks.

None of those are really beneveolent.

Edit: One interesting tidbit about his visit to roanoke, apparently tickets (something like 3,200 ppl showed up outside of the fire station) were handed out in the very archaic fashion of standing in line for them. This was done in one spot in Roanoke city, one in Roanoke county(which made a killing in parking tickets since it was a largely residential area), and one in Blacksburg.

So, when you have three thousand people trying to get something in three places, well, the lines get long. Real long. Many people had to spend literally a night and a day to get them, so basically if you wanted to be able to say, "I saw the POTUS in person in Roanoke" you'd better have been unemployed or retired, because the tickets went out for grabs on a typical working (well, for those of us that work anyway) Wednesday!
