The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors are currently in the process of considering an unwarranted ordinance that would ban the discharge of firearms within 100 yards of any dwelling or occupied building. This ordinance, prepared at the request Chairman Butch Church, was not proposed as the result of any direct incident but rather stands as an example of a creating a law without cause or genuine purpose. It is currently illegal to discharge firearms anywhere in Roanoke County without lawful purpose, such as hunting or target shooting, so establishing an additional ordinance around an arbitrary distance is simply illogical and redundant.

Introduced at the Board of Supervisors meeting on May 10 for first reading, this proposed ordinance has already undergone a Work Session and is now expected to be considered on second reading at their July 12 meeting. While the board will meet on June 28, this proposed ordinance was not placed on the agenda due to time constraints and more pressing concerns, yet another sign that this ban is unneeded and ultimately serves no legitimate purpose.

Please contact members of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and urge them to stop wasting county time on this uncalled for ordinance and oppose it should it be brought up on July 12. Please click here to locate your Supervisor and their contact information.

Virginia: No Hearing for Unnecessary Discharge Ban Ordinance in Roanoke County!

Thanks to your calls and e-mails, Butch Church, Chairman of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors, announced that the Board will not hold a hearing on the proposed ordinance limiting firearm discharge in Roanoke County.

Thank you to everyone who helped to ensure that Roanoke County would still maintain its sporting and firearm heritage.

Please contact Chairman Church at bchurch@roanokecountyva.gov and thank him for opposing this unnecessary proposal to regulate firearms in Roanoke County.
