Hollande defeats Sarkozy in French presidency vote

Post by ShotgunBlast »

"Austerity can no longer be inevitable!" Socialist Francois Hollande declared in a victory speech Sunday night after Sarkozy conceded.

This will be interesting to watch as there has been quite a shakeup in Eurozone leadership. After two years of austerity measures that haven't been working, citizens are getting fed up and voting leaders out.

I'm not sure what the answer is on a national level between government spending or austerity measures, but I know in my home and business we are slashing expenses in an effort to stay lean and mean so we will be better prepared no matter what happens on a national or international level.

I think the key point for us to realize here is that austerity must "work". It must be understood by the majority of people to be "working". Unfortunately, the MSM in our country will never allow that to happen. If we, the US, ever get to a point where austerity is being discussed by conservative leadership, the MSM will demonize every bit of it to the bitter end, which will likely result in conservative leadership being voted out due to social unrest generated by the MSM.

Well - that's how I see it going down, anyway.

I'm very much afraid you're right. From where we are now, no matter what destination we ultimately choose (socialism or capitalism) and which route we take to get there, we're gonna have to wade through some DEEP DOO-DOO to get there.

Lessons learned about life from birthing four children. Two with epidurals (first two), two without any pain meds.

Yeah stinks, but lke most things in life the only way out is through and any attempt to get around that will just make your life more difficult in the end with longer lasting side effects.

Similarly, France is attempting to side step trouble.....it won't work and even if it does the side effects will make them (eventually) wish they had not gone that route at all. But perhaps eventually they will learn as I did it is better to just get on with it and get through it than to try and sidestep the nonsense.

On childbirth options YMMV.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne ... -plan.html
Mr Hollande, who opinion polls consistently put ahead of Mr Sarkozy in the race to win the presidential election in April and May, unveiled the 75 per cent tax rate plan on a television show late on Monday.

"I have seen the considerable rise in the pay of the CAC 40 bosses (those running the biggest companies on the French stock exchange). Two million euros (a year) on average. How can we accept that?" he asked.

His campaign manager, Pierre Moscovici said the new tax would affect "between 7,000 and 30,000 people".

Mr Hollande's manifesto proposes creating a rate of 45 per cent tax on incomes above 150,000 euros a year. Currently the highest tax bracket in France is 41 per cent.

The Sarkozy government recently added an exceptional levy of four per cent on anyone earning over 500,000 euros.
Whoa. the only way I could accept this if the government had simultaneous and corresponding spending cuts...but he plans to increase spending. 75% is brutal.

My French acquantances in the FN think they will win next time as a result of this, hope so.

Incidentally did anyone else see Monsieur Hollandes campaign video? The song is "Niggas in Paris"

Telling you guys man, demographics. They matter.

Expect something similar from Obama.

I'm waiting to see just how long this kind of bigotry is tolerated.

I wonder how many of them are warming up their passports now?

Nah, they're one step ahead of them. France has a steep exit tax if you leave the EU, which I assume will rise higher now.

You can leave, but your pockets will be much lighter.

The productive wealth producers will leave.
It's a matter of pay it now or they'll steal it later.

If they're really that wealthy, I expect they'd have little trouble either coughing up, or if they're more principled, finding a way to avoid/evade an exit tax.

Or they can stay in the EU, and just head to a country with better tax rates. There's got to be at least one with lower taxes than France.

Weird thing about the EU, the only country with "low" (relative to France, Germany, or such where you can maintain a similar quality of life-scratch PIGS) taxes is the UK....where the cost of living is much higher.

Exit taxes are IMO a punitive final kick in the ass and rifling of the wallet by a bloated state.

Edit: The higher tax rates will affect those with €500.000 and up; thats not so rich to just jet off somewhere.

I have experienced tax increases on my own. I had a business, and we had a crisis in '97-98. Business slowed down, taxes increased, it was not sustainable anymore. So I laid off 6 people, including myself, and from paying taxes I went to collect unemployment. Most small businesses went to the same path, and working under table became a mass sport. Of course the state did not collect more money, but instead had to borrow money to pay unemployment. And of course the rich did not paid more, they always have plenty loopholes.
After a disaster in finance and the country being just couple days away of being declared bankrupt, they finally figured out that killing the cow instead of milking it is not a good way to run things. But the cow was already dead, and it took some 10 years to recover from that poop.
Bottom line, do not expect this to work in France, too. Only to make things worse.

But in the long run no matter how steep the exit tax is you convince yourself it's an investment because taxes are only going to rise. And even if ever rich guy bails and pays the exit tax your going to run out of that money to. See the thing about socialism is it's a great system- until you run out of everyone else's money.
