Youth Forum

Post by moss20 »

Have a section devoted to youth shooting clubs, groups, competitions, events, etc. There is an enormous amount of opportunities for young people to shoot in this state in many categories. A lot of people don't know what is available for there children. There are programs from 4-H, NRA, CMP, VSSA, ATA, USA Shooting, etc. We need to get more kids involved in these programs to teach them proper gun safety and handling, competitive shooting has less injuries than any other sport. There could be future college or Olympic opportunities for some shooters. It can be a year round sport to keep them busy and out of trouble, and is more mental than physical--so they don't have to be great athletes.

I am glad I stumbled across a parent at a soccer practice almost 2 years ago that had a son in a 4-H program or I still wouldn't know about these opportunities for my son. He loves it, he has already won individual and team awards in multiple events and last month his team finished 2nd at the State Air Championship in BB and qualified for the Daisy Nationals in Arkansas this summer. He competed 4 out of 5 weekends last month in 4-H, NRA, and USA Shooting competitions. He had teammates compete at the Naval Academy last month, and some will go to Camp Perry this summer.

Can you help keep a new "Youth Shooting" forum stocked with good posts and opportunities?

I think it's a great idea - I'm just afraid that it wouldn't get much action unless there's some good content/information there, and I just can't do it all myself.

I'll work on getting some links to websites and info on different programs for you as I have time. I'm working a lot of hours right now and getting my son ready for the Daisy Nationals this summer, so it might take me a little while.
