OC "Walmart Walk" Gone Wrong

In Mesa, a man was inside a Walmart bathroom when a bullet struck just a few feet from the urinal where he was standing.

"Last thing that you'd expect is for a gunshot to go off, go right through the stall door while you're doing your business if you will," said Sgt. Ed Wessing from the Mesa Police Department.

The gun went off in the men's bathroom at the Walmart on McKellips and Greenfield roads Saturday afternoon.

"I'm certain that our victim in this case was startled to say the least," said Wessing.

That man was standing at the urinal when police say 24-year-old Andrew Seals entered a stall wearing a western-style holster and .357-caliber antique revolver.

Before he could sit down, he had an accident.

"He took the belt off as he was going to use the restroom and it dropped on the floor, and the motion of it hitting the floor caused that weapon to discharge. When you're in a closed environment like that, it's extremely loud and extremely startling," Wessing said.

The big bullet traveled right through the metal door, ricocheted off the wall and took out a light fixture up above, then struck the floor only a few feet from where the victim was standing. He was pretty shaken up about it.

"He felt that his life was endangered by what happened," said Wessing.

CBS 5 News visited Seals at his Phoenix home Monday night, but he didn't want to talk about the incident.

Think he was able to finish his business in the stall? "Sorry! Hang on a sec, K?"

Hey, it was a .357. So, it had to be a big bullet right.

His story sounds a little far fetched, he is claiming that nobody pulled the trigger correct?

That's why the old gunfighters and cowboys carried their single-action revolvers with the hammer on a empty chamber.

Yes, according to the article.

I have a replica 1873 44-40 single action made by Uberti for Cabelas. It has the firing pin in the hammer and no transfer bar or other safety. You need to carry this pistol with the chamber beneath the hammer unloaded - just like the real cowboys did. Assuming the article is factual, it's an example of why you need to know the characteristics of your gun to prevent an ignorant if not negligent discharge.

Exactly what I was thinking. How does an antique revolver go off from dropping it on the ground? Was the hammer pulled back? How did it fall out of the holster? Sounds like dipshit was playing with it (no pun intended) in the stall.
Look unimportant, the enemy might be low on ammo.

I've heard it said that if you shake it more than twice you're playing with it.

In the Corps it was 150 times. Different rules I guess.

Depends on the gun. My 1910 Colt Police Positive Special has the firing pin on the hammer. That's why people back then didn't rest the hammer on a live round. There was no firing pin block. If his gun was like that, its certainly possible to have it fire after hitting the ground.

And one more thing, when I was in LE, we were actually instructed what to do with our gun when sitting down in a public restroom. Guess he didn't know what to do....
