I thought you couln't sell out of your house...that you had to have a storefront?

Yes, if you reside in the home and conduct a portion of business out of it AND claim that space (I believe one-third) is used for business purposes then you can claim a tax deduction. Yay!
Anyhow, it isn't difficult to apply for what's known as a Conditional Use Permit either, though it is generally posted on the property and heard before City Council and possibly the Board of Zoning Appeals.
