CHP question
I am going to try to get my CHP. I have the SP248 form. I took a NRA handgun course about 10 years ago, and passed it. My question is this...Will they take the paperwork from my course from 10 years ago? Or do I need to retake another?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: CHP question
This is the list of accepted training accepted for a CHP from the VA state police website, There is no limit on time or when the training was taken,, I would say your handgun course is acceptable... The court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by one of the following, but no applicant shall be required to submit to any additional demonstration of competence:
1.Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state;
2.Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
3.Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services;
4.Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
5.Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;
6.Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;
7.Completing any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor;
8.Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties; or
9.Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.

Re: CHP question
Yep - I agree...there's no time limit. Competence is determined by training as outlined above. If you are a military veteran and have your DD-214 - regardless whether you were discharged last week or 30 years ago, your experience serves as demonstration of competence. Same goes for NRA courses or any other method if indicating competence.

Re: CHP question
How about if you are currently on active duty in the military? What kind of proof would you need then. If all you need is the dd-214 when discharged wouldn't a copy of my active duty ID be sufficient?

Re: CHP question
You need proof of satisfactory knowledge of firearm operation and safety. Nothing defines the documents that you must produce as an active duty military member, but it should suffice to bring a copy of your pistol shooting certificate or page 13 entry. Your current military ID might do the trick as well, but I would have backup from your service record just in case.
Re: CHP question
Rick you may be correct that his ID would work. Any firearm qualification records wouldn't hurt either. My son is a Correctional Officer and got his permit using his prison ID and training records.
Re: CHP question
I think I'll take a course anyway. Couldn't hurt to get a refresher. These aren't toys you know. Plus my wife and neighbor want to take it too so it will be a threesome of learning so to say.

Re: CHP question
Are we talking about the CCW, Concealed Carry Weapon permit ? If so, it is valid for 5 years . If not renewed by paying the fee it expires and you have to take the firearms safety course again in order to renew it. If I'm not on the right subject I apologize friends.

Re: CHP question
I dont think you have to show competency proof for renewal. Code just say you will be issued a new one unless there is reason otherwise. It does explicitly state you dont have to do fingerprints again.
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...

Re: CHP question
Safety course does not have to be taken again, there is no time limits in the law stating how long the training is good for. If there were a limit on how long the treining is good many of us that have been out of the service for a while would not have been able to use our DD214's.
