Where to shoot in/near Winchester?

What range did you visit, what did you shoot, how were you treated, etc. Tell us about your day at the range.

Where to shoot in/near Winchester?

Post by Kotar »

We recently moved into the Winchester area. Where does everyone (anyone) go to shoot out here?

I mostly shoot with a pistol, but I hope to shoot with a rifle from time to time.

Suggestions?

Winchester Conservation Club just off Route 522 North in Gainesboro. Need a membership and that can be purchased at Old Dominion Sporting Goods on Valley Ave. across from the car wash. $80 first year then $50 after, as soon as you join you can shoot. 75 and 100 yd rifle and pistol out to what looks like 50, 2 trap fields (no idea when they shoot), stocked fishing lake and (I think) 150 acres there to hunt on. I've never hunted there so I do not know the procedure if there is one. Also you'll need to bring your own targets and holders as shitheads tend to shoot the holders to hell in about 1 day of use.

Got a truck or 4X4? Check out Cove Campground not far from Winchester.

If you are interested in some shooting and training, we have a new live fire course in Doswell...not too far away.

I have belonged to the Izaak walton off of Rt 50 between Winchester and Boyce for some time. Nice ranges and fishing etc.

I would be happy to get you sponsored, $100 a year, with member only access using an electronic gate card.

I am also an FFL so can help you out with transfers or other purchases if you ever need.

Up the road in Inwood there is an indoor range in the basement of a gun store.

340 north of Berryville has 340 Defense, pricey, but an option.

Welcome to Virginia!

We regularly have students come from Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, etc....so no, 2 hours is not too far away for good training.

forget the conservation club out on rt.522 north of winchester. any good day out there its filled up and you can only shoot/ occupy range for 45 minutes. no rapid fire. targets are lousy cause people blast em apart. i got so fed up i droped membership and am using a neighbors land out in the boonies. no time limit and i can camp out and practice any time. checked out making it a real open to the public range but damned if were goin thru all the red tape! point is make friends that have extra land! :hysterical:

@steelheart:

Thanks for the input.

As to any range that is mostly open to the public, I have the flexibility to make my own schedule, so I try to go weekday mornings. I wonder if the Conservation Club is busy weekdays as well?

Your advice to 'make friends with land' is a good one. Thankfully, there is still lots of land and lots of people to be friendly with in this region.

Finally, ain't it a shame what the EPA, et al, are doing to restrict private property rights? I just don't understand people with power suddenly deciding they have the need, understanding, or Constitutional authority to run everyone else's affairs.

Of course the NRA is about an hour drive east, just off 66 in Fairfax. Real good indoor range, pistols, rifles and shotguns. Usually a wait for a lane.

range at conservation club is the worst before hunting season at any time or day. i have had luck around 8 am thru the week sometimes. yeah epa would have been the worst to deal with to start a range. basically you have to dig out a set number of feet to remove any lead down range all the while your being charged so much for an epa inspector to watch and take samples! easier to bring in either sand or clean fill dirt for a bullet stop at a friends place. cheaper to. then just :pistol: :ak47: :machinegun: away!

No idea where some of this came from. I’ve been a member there for a year now and have only run into “crowding” twice and then only had to wait for 10 minutes before someone left. As for the 45 minute rule…WHAT? I’ve been there for 3 hours or more numerous times, most recently last weekend. No rapid fire, huh? I shoot my M16 and M11/9 and M10/45 all the time and so have other people that walked up as asked. NOBODY has said a thing and I’ve shot them while there was a board meeting. Yes, the target frames last about 10 minutes before they are shot to hell and back, that why I bring my own. All of my shooting has been on the weekends and if I had to guess, during the week you would be the only one there.

Maybe this post is a little old now but....

340 Defense, just over the border in Rippon, WV, is a decent outdoor range near Winchester. They have 25, 50, 100, and 400 yard lanes. They emphasize safety but otherwise don't have a lot of the silly, bureaucratic rules that are common at other ranges. Check them out online.

Peacemaker National Training Center is just up the road, west of Inwood. It's open as weather permits during the winter, but it's an amazing facility:

Current 3 Gun Nation was shot at Peacemaker.
