Order your 100W light bulbs before they are illegal

Post by OakRidgeStars »

Only one month left to stock up on those evil 100 watt light bulbs before they become illegal to sell. Order yours now and stick to the man.

Amazon.com - http://tinyurl.com/dxf8htu

Home Depot usually has good prices as well.

So you still have time to get the other bulb types....
100w in Jan 2012
60w in Jan 2013
40w in Jan 2014

"specialty bulbs" are exempt right now, but become non-exempt in 2020.

Might want to save a bulb or two so you can show the grand kids how we used to read books at night in the 'old days'

All shades of truths...

There are NO conventional incandescent bulbs that can meet this standard. The replacement incandescent bulbs that are being offered by the lighting makers are HALOGENS.

I find it interesting that the lighting makers lobbied for the new rules, and already had a product in the market that met the new standards.

My experience with the halogen bulbs is that they are much more sensitive to burn out if bumped while in operation, or just after being turned off.

Take a look here
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/LightBulbLaws/

Sylvania shows which types of bulbs phase out an when, and which products are replacements for the outgoing incandescent.

On a side tangent I thought we were promised the LED bulbs were going to be a big deal when they get here... we'll they are here, pricey, but available.... but they draw about the same electricity for the same light output as a CFL.

My understanding is the LEDs are about the same lumens per watt of electricity used, but that (a) they last almost indefinitely, and (b) when disposed of don't have the toxic remains.

Yes, those are the big pluses.

Now if the cost could just come down to something approaching reasonable.

Gotta wait, new gadgets always drop in price. The early x-mas present I got myself (an LED tv) used to cost a small fortune when new, now, theyre much more affordable.

Of course, the speakers on these paper thin TV's suck, so I gotta buy a sound system...which raises the price back up and DAMNIT I GOT HOODWINKED!

Not trying to be the cynical ol' bum here but LED lites su... for casting light. Don't get me wrong; they are great for things like boat trailer lites or anywhere lite bulbs are placed in extreme environments. I used to spend a lot of time inside boat and yacht engine rooms and I personally hate LED flashlights. Uncle Sam gave me a few Mag Lites over the years and these new LED flashlights pardon the pun, don't hold a candle to them.

I also replaced, at rather large expense, the overhead cockpit lites in my boat and I hate them. The amount of lite that was cast from a good old cheap incandescent bulb was considerably better for tying baits and reading charts in the dark. I bought what was considered the equivalent of a 25W lite and got burned. And since I'm cheap, I can't stand to throw it overboard and go back old school.

Say what you want, you can't change my mind and I ain't buying into the hype. I'll replace my 12V 25W lite bulbs twice a year at $2.50 a shot just to be happy. Sermon over, Please rise for the invocation. :enlighten:

You know, it's not just cost, or lumens.

The bandwidth for Fluroscent, and LED is VERY narrow. Very harsh on the eyes, and has been known to cause headaches. I did a whole report in college on the bandwidth of light, and the variations it has on the human body. Tried to show that certain lights can actually be used to calm folks down in custody.

It's why I went with incandescent lights with a soft pastel hue in the kids room... makes them as calm as Hindu Cows.

As Recerenddel said incandescent are full spectrum as are halogens. The light they give off is much more natural than LEDs. I might have to stock up on incan bulbs but for certain things I dont mind LEDs.

I have designed and built high powered bicycle lights that I love to use but home ican is where its at for the home.

Then your playing with cheap LEDs. Maglite actually makes an LED version and I have the 3D. I have personally done a head to head with the incan version and the LED is far superior. Then problem lies in the fact that the market is flooded with really cheap old style LED lights. Anytime a flashlight claims to have a ton of LEDs it a cheapy. That said most of them, even the nice quality ones, have a "cool white" color just not as bad as the cheapys. Apparently you can get them in a neutral or even warm colors but I haven't tried them. Generally they are expensive, I payed $55 for my first true quality light but it beats any incan its size and even some much bigger. They have come down a little but not much. HID still dominate for max throw but it won't be long before that claim will be lost.

I have been AMAZED by the LED upgrades made for Maglite flashlights by TerraLUX. These upgrades- the smaller ones put out 140 Lumens. The higher prices ones put out 600 Lumens. I have a couple of the 140 Lumen models (TLE-6EX) in my lights, and I love them.

http://maglitesales.com/maglitestore/in ... rers_id/23

As for inside the home - I don't use much other than 60 Watt incandescents, so I won't be affected by the "Light bulb ban" for awhile. I have considered buying some LEDs to see how I like them for home, but havedn;t forked out the $20 to $60 each since I have ceiling fans all over the house and would have to buy four bulbs for each fan. Hell, at that price, I may as well just buy new fans!

I have used a few CFLs, and have found that in my usage, they burn out just as quickly as a filament-based bulb. I wasn;t too happy with that since they touted them to last 5 times longer and I paid 10 times more for them.

And here is the source of all complaints and issues with LEDs. There are all kinds of companies and people putting 10 cent LEDs in products and claiming they are amazing...NOT. If you've owned high-end products (e.g. Surefire) in both incandescent and LED, you know all about the huge efficiencies a good LED and driver provide over an incandescent for a given lumen output.
