Arrow Vanes

Post by suburbanredneck »

I just bought another set of arrows for the upcoming season. I ended up buying the standard carbon cheapies with 4" vanes. Most of the arrows with 2" vanes were more expensive. Is accuracy really that much better with 2" vanes? Enough so to justify the additional cost?

In my experience 2"- 4" vanes made no difference in accuracey. Your bow however may respond differently. I would recomend you purchase one or two 2" vaned arrows and test them yourself then make a decision wether any amount of improvement justifies the expense.

Well it is a personal opinion but I have always like the 4" myself. I tried the 2" for a while and went back to the 4's as they seem to keep my carbons more stable with broadhead’s.

I use a 100 grain 4 bladed fixed broadhead with three 4" helical vanes for my hunting arrow setup and have found that they are very accurate out to 50 yards.

I would think it would depend on a few factors. I found smaller vanes work better when using a "wisker biscuit" on a compound. Larger vanes worked better when using fishing tips and solid tree tips. [the flat slug type heads useful for birds and squirrels as they don't stick into the tree.] Each have their use. I personally like the smaller vanes for my compound and the wider for my traditional bows as they seem to help mitigate my twitchy nature. I don't think I have seen anything but "medium" vanes for my crossbow but I don't think it would be as much off a factor as I can shoot rebar from the thing.
