The only state that has laws banning tracers, that I'm aware of, is California. I've ordered commercially produced tracers and had them shipped to me here in VA without problems. I've always used various S&W J frames. Though I do have a Bond Derringer in .45 Colt/.410 2.5" and an American Derringer Corporation 9mm. I don't consider them quite as useful. I don't trust very small autos, though I eventually had a Kel Tec P32 that worked well enough with FMJ for a time....

A Colt - the 6920 is the M4 clone by which all others are judged - is probably always a good choice. Much better than a DPMS, at least based on the DPMS that I own (the only AR that I ever got rid of). CMMG, RRA, Noveske, LMT, and Sabre are also pretty good brands with the newer offerings from Smith...
