Rock Island 1911 GI 38 Super

Postby ProfessorMike » Sun, 15 Mar 2020 12:43:03

Bought NIB Rock Island 1911 GI Full Size 38 Super. I installed a full length Gide rod , Beavertail grip safety and skeletonized hammer all from Bill Wilson. Had them installed by a gunsmith. At first I couldn’t get it to feed the first round until I applied a couple of drops of oil on the slide and rail. Took out to shoot and fired the first round from 15 yards hit the X outstanding however it won’t extract or eject the spent round. Tried again same thing. Tried again this time stovepiped. Tried several rounds with the same results either or. Help.

A couple drops of oil on the rails? I put 3 or 4 on each side of the frame rails.

How dry is the rest of the pistol?

Oil will not hurt your pistol. We don't live in the dusty southwest deserts were oil is supposed to be an issue collecting dust and gumming up a pistol.

I bought a well used/abused Pre B CZ85 imported from the middle east a few years ago. The old lube/powder residue and light brown dust was packed in some areas like cosmoline, or lapping compound due to the crud/dust. So someone over there was oiling that pistol.

Put some oil on the rails, sit down with the pistol empty and just start working the slide back and forth by hand.

Oh, and put some oil on the recoil spring guide, the barrel where the lugs on top lock into the slide, the barrel where it slides through the barrel bushing, the hammer where the slide pushes against it to cock it, the hammer spring and guide in the back of the frame, the sear where it contacts the hammer, etc.

A "dry gun" may work but it needs to be pretty well worn and sloppy. A nice tight new pistol has a lot of friction it has to overcome to work properly.

I’m a firm believer in oil. New out of the box I oil all mated surfaces. Worked the slide numerous times without the magazine. I’m thinking about replacing the ejector and extractor.

:pistol: I have 3 Rock Island 1911's...TCM.22 /9mm , 9mm w/4.25' bull barrel and a XT.22 MAG. I keep them "well lubed" and cleaned pretty regularly . They all really seem to like a well oiled loading ramp and slide. I shoot them quite a bit and hardly have any loading or jamming issues. I shoot many different kinds of ammo....Brass, Aluminum and steel cased. Usually it's an ammo issue and not the gun. I would say , keep them clean and oiled and the more you shoot it the better it will shoot ! :pistol:
