Alleged burglar breaks into home to find woman - gets shot

I recall Geraldo Rivera saying he has never heard of anyone defending themselves with a gun.

Looks like this guy was out on bail of $4,000. Now set at $100,000 - might keep his safe for a while.

A man who broke into a woman's apartment in Antioch late Friday morning was met with an unexpected surprise when he walked into her bedroom and she shot him, according to Metro police.

Police said 36-year-old JoShanda Odems heard repeated knocking at the door of her Waterford Crossings apartment complex on Old Franklin Road around 11 a.m.

Odems looked through the peephole and saw a man she did not know and then went to a closet in her bedroom and pulled a .357 revolver, police said.

According to a news release sent out Friday, Odems was on the phone with a 911 operator when she heard the man come inside the apartment and, moments later, saw him enter her bedroom.

"When Odems came face to face with Hartman at her closet door, she fired one time in defense of herself," the news release said.

Odems was not sure her shot had hit the man, but 24-year-old Trenton Hartman showed up at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his shoulder a short time after, police said.

Odems identified Hartman as the burglar after being shown a photo lineup. Hartman was treated and released and is now charged with aggravated burglary, police said. His bond is set at $100,000.

Hartman was free on $4,000 bond on a felony theft charge stemming from his arrest earlier this month in connection to stolen lottery tickets from a local convenience market.
