The Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) has sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to county circuit clerks across the Commonwealth asking to obtain information about Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) holders before the data is sealed on July 1.

State Senator Mark Obenshain (R-Virginia) sponsored a bill (SB-1335) to keep these records private, and this bill was passed and signed into law – set to become effective July 1, 2013. The law was written in an effort to protect the private information attached to CHP requests by preventing disclosure of the data.

With all of the hullabaloo lately about citizens’ privacy, this seems to be an extremely bad move on the part of the Virginia Republican Party. It’s believed that they have already mined this data in previous years so that they could send political materials to like-minded individuals. If this is the case, then why don’t they just go with their list from last year and leave the issue alone?

Efforts are underway to send requests to circuit clerks requesting that they do not honor the FOIA requests, and a request has also been sent to the RPV asking that they rescind their request. If the RPV does no rescind the request, Joseph Womack has vowed to file a motion in Prince George County seeking an injunction to stop the release of CHP holder information.

Several circuit clerks are essentially on record indicating that they will not respond to the RPV request, or will respond in a way that does not include the information that the RPV is seeking. Here is a list of those counties as of this posting:

Dinwiddie
Winchester
Hopewell
Colonial Heights
Chesterfield
Southampton
Waynesboro
Suffolk
Middlesex
Isle of Wight
Bedford
Prince George
City of Virginia Beach

Requests have been sent to several others (I personally sent a similar request via email to the King George County Clerk), but no response has yet been received.

This is the FOIA request sent by the RPV

This is the letter sent by Joseph Womack to the Prince George County Clerk

And here’s a copy of the email that I sent to the King George County Clerk:

Hello Mr. Mason,

It has come to my attention that the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV)
has sent requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requesting
private details related to Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) holders in every
county in Virginia. If you are in receipt of this letter, which was dated
on or around June 6, 2013, I urge you NOT honor the request from the RPV.

You're likely aware that a law was passed by our General Assembly to
protect this data which goes into effect on 1 July, 2013. This FOIA
request by the RPV is clearly an attempt to mine this data just before the
new law goes into effect.

As a party with standing in this matter, as my data is at risk of being
disclosed, I urge you to refuse to comply with this request.

Please let me know if you do or do not intend to provide this information
to Mr. Reedy of the RPV.

Thank you for your time and for your service to our county.

Respectfully,

Rrrr Sssssss

This thread will be expanded in the next few days, and really it should have been up sooner, but we need to start with what we know the ground rules to be for 3D printing firearms.

I’ll be bringing in legal authority and FAQ, but for now, if you are not a registered FFL/SOT:

1. DO NOT print a completely polymer firearm capable of firing a bullet (barrel inserts or no), as you will likely create an NFA regulated firearm. Specifically, you will likely create an AOW zip gun.

2. DO NOT print a completely polymer firearm capable of firing a bullet (barrel inserts or no), as you will likely violate the so-called Undetectable Firearms Act.

Not listening to items 1 and 2 means you are on your way to committing a Federal crime. Because of the public profile and interest over this kind of activity at the moment, you WILL be made an example of. You WILL go to federal prison, and you WILL never be able to own a firearm again.

A seven year old second grader was suspended from Driver Elementary School in Suffolk, Virginia for holding his pencil like a gun. The boy was playing like he was a Marine and another kid was the “bad guy”. The boy held his pencil and made “pew-pew” sounds. The teacher asked him to stop, so he did.

I suppose the story could have ended there, but it didn’t. The Political Correctness Police had to step in and suspend the little boy under their “Zero Tolerance” rule. I prefer to call it the “Zero Intelligence” rule.

Bethanne Bradshaw, a spokesperson for Suffolk Public Schools said “A pencil is a weapon when it is pointed at someone in a threatening way and gun noises are made”

Give us your thoughts at the VGOF discussion thread for this story.

Are you kidding me? What’s wrong with these people? Clearly, these are rhetorical questions, but I’ll provide the answers anyway. The liberal/progressive/socialist/communist/whatever-you-want-to-call-it agenda has perverted our public school system just like it has perverted the rest of our society. Schools are no longer places for children to learn – they’re places for adults with agendas to push their agendas and forcefully indoctrinate our children into their liberal mindset. Children can’t pray, they can’t show respect to our flag, they can’t play dodge-ball or tag or pretend Cowboys and Indians. It’s absolutely ridiculous, and it’s why my children go to a private school. The public school system is a joke – and unfortunately, it gets less funny every day when absurdities like this happen.

With recent events in New York regarding the Journal News use of the FOIA and subsequent release of New York Concealed Permit holders (see here), this law makes a lot of sense and puts a layer of protection between CHP holders and the left-wing media. The Journal News even went so far as to publish an interactive map with each CHP holder’s address clearly delineated on a map! The publishing of CHP holder information has also been a problem in Virginia over the past several years with names and addresses being published in the Roanoke Times and the Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star newspapers.

My personal thanks to Senator Obenshain and everyone who voted “YEA” on this bill. The final step is Governor McDonnell’s signature.

You can Send Governor McDonnell an email urging him to sign the bill by visiting his website

Here’s the full text of the bill, as amended in the House: http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?131+ful+SB1335H1

From VCDL:
VICTORY! YOU DID IT!

The Senate has just agreed to the House version of Senator Obenshain’s SB 1335!

The bill will now head to the Governor’s desk. If he signs SB 1335, then the
private information of all CHP holders will be kept private and not be given to the
press or anyone else (except police while in the performance of their duties).

It passed by a massive margin of 31 to 9!

Our next step will be to contact the Governor. I’ll get back on that and I will advise who supported gun owners and who voted against us shortly.

From VSSA:
Victory for CHP Holder Privacy Protection

The State Senate just passed the House of Delegates substitute to SB 1335 related to the personal information of concealed handgun permit holders being public information.

The bill as introduced would have only protected the personal information of those permit (CHP) holders who had an active protective order. The House made the bill applicable to all CHP holders. The Senate voted by a vote of 31-9 to accept the
House Substitute. This is a huge victory for Virginia CHP holders. If signed by Governor McDonnell, CHP holders will no longer have to worry about their personal information being published in newspapers or being available to anyone other than law enforcement.

When the final vote is posted on the Legislative Information System, VSSA will post the link on the VSSA Blog and gun owners are urged to thank those senators who supported the right to privacy of CHP holders.

It seems that the Democrat gun-haters are trying a new tactic in the gun control fight. They just want everyone to own an Over/Under shotgun that’s suitable for skeet shooting!

I saw in today’s VCDL VA-Alert that Terry McAuliffe, a known gun-hater liberal in Virginia, has decided to buy a shotgun. This brought me back to memories of some recent headlines that I’ve seen, and I realized that Democrats, while demonizing “Black rifles” are trying to make shotguns sound like the weapon that everyone should own. This is an interesting tactic, and I wanted to bring it to your attention.

Joe Biden: “Get yourself a shotgun”
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/biden-self-defense-yourself-shotgun-201933598–politics.html

Barack Obama: “At Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/01/28/obama-at-camp-david-we-do-skeet-shooting-all-the-time/

Terry McAuliffe: His campaign confirmed the purchase and even gave us a reason. “It was a Beretta shotgun so he and his son, who is currently a second-year midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, can go skeet shooting together,” said campaign spokesman Josh Schwerin.

The media and the anti-gunners are trying to tell Americans that “assault weapons” need to be banned for public safety. The problem is, assault rifles were banned as an amendment to the “Firearm Owners Protection Act” (FOPA) in 1986. What they want to ban now are semi-automatic sporting firearms. The firearms they want to ban account for less than 1% of the firearms used in crime. We need to stop this mindless attack on our Constitutional rights.

This link will take you to a Congressional website where you can quickly and easily email your Senators, Congressmen and the President: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/mail/?alertid=61046526&type=ML

The following video outlines the difference between a modern Sporting Rifle and a true “Assault Weapon”. Although the two look very much alike, there is a very clear functional difference between them.

Definitions:

Assault Weapon is capable of “Select Fire”, which means that it can fire in “Full Auto” mode, where a single pull of the trigger can fire multiple projectiles until the trigger is released. Basically, an Assault Weapon is classified as a Machine Gun.

Sporting Rifle does not allow Select Fire mode, and can only fire a single projectile for each pull of the trigger.

There is nothing in the article about guns. Not one word about shooting or cleaning or sighting in your deer rifle. The entire post is about the Democrat machine, how it operates, and how it relies upon the freebies that it hands out to those who will continue to vote for it.
