Query About Parking Lots

Postby Deviant » Fri, 25 Jun 2010 17:41:53

Greetings, I literally just received my Handgun Carry Permit yesterday and I have a question I hope someone here might be qualified to answer.

First off, I am actually a Tennessee resident with a TN HCP, but I live 5 minutes from Virginia so that's why I am asking this question here, as it pertains to carrying in a Virginia Employment Commission parking lot. In short, I clean the building, but am a third party contractor, not a government employee.

The building itself has a "Firearms Prohibited" message taped to the front/main entrance of the building, but not at every entrance (Not sure if that matters in VA, but it does in TN). Actually, I don't want to carry inside the building as it is empty when I clean it, but I would like to be able to leave my firearm in my locked truck without any law violation. It is often pretty late when I get off, and I would feel safer being able to drive to and from work carrying.

I decided to bring it here because the local PD website is lacking in resources, although if you guys can't help me don't worry about it. With all that said, is it legal to do so or not?

Thank you.

Welcome to VGOF, Deviant! :welcome:

Since this is state property instead of Federal government property, I don't see a problem with leaving your handgun secured in your vehicle. If this was Federal government property, it would be a different story. And a very confusing story at that.

It sounds like you're out in the Tri-Cities area?.

Thank you for the prompt reply. Yep, I live in the Tri Cities.

Also a clarification, from what I noticed while at work, they have recently taken down the no Firearms/weapons sign. I assume there is no issue with state property unless otherwise specified.

Exactly why I would carry inside the building.

Empty office building + at night + person alone inside = victim zone.

+1

The signs matter in as much as they must be posted where they can be "reasonably seen". One could argue that because signs are not posted on all entrances, one could gain access to the building without ever having noticed a sign.

I think I'd feel less safe in a building by myself at night, than in a car with lockable doors and a gas pedal.

Also, in Virginia we do not have Handgun Carry Permits. A permit is not required to carry a handgun here. A permit *is* required to carry a handgun concealed, hence Concealed Handgun Permits (CHP).

I certainly do not disagree with you, but a 2 pound 1911 + hours of manual labor just doesn't entirely appeal to me.

I know, but I could have said "I received my concealed carry permit", and someone knowledgeable about TN would know we don't technically have those, and I would end up right here explaining "I know, lol" either way :D

Oh I'm sorry I misunderstood. I thought you had just received your non-resident VA CHP. Now I see that you have your TN HCP which is recognized by Virginia.
