Pistol in car on campus

Postby m4a1mustang » Tue, 06 Sep 2011 21:48:32

I think the answer to this question is "no," but I just want to make sure:

Could a commuter student, living off-campus, keep a pistol in their car parked on campus grounds while attending class? This would be for GMU.

Check the schools rules, they may be able to toss you out of the school for the violation.
Of course it is in the last place you looked, your not going to keep looking for something after you've found it.

Yep, seems like anywhere on campus, including vehicle. This is for students, faculty, and staff of course.

...But I could carry with a permit as a visitor? Was visiting my daughter last weekend and figured I couldn't even leave it in the car.

It seems from the AG's recent opinion that schools may pass rules prohibiting students/staff/faculty from possessing firearms on campus. However this restriction does not appear to apply to visitors as the visitors have no relationship with the institution by which they may place restrictions on you.

As to the OP, I'd be about 99.999% that the rule prohibits you from having the firearm on campus. If you park on campus, then you'd be in violation if that were the case.

Yeah, I was just making sure that there were no provisions that would allow for a student to at least keep one in their vehicle while on campus grounds. My GF has class a few nights at week and even if she can't carry while walking around campus, it would be nice if she could at least keep it locked in her car, but that doesn't appear to be an option.

My how times change!

In high school, a lot us us brought guns to school because we were going hunting either before or after school or both. We did keep them in our cars, but everybody knew it and nobody worried. I once did a science project where I measured the muzzle velicity of a .22LR rifle. Involved firing the rifle up a pipe with a slit in it into a wooden plug and marking the displacement against the acceleration of gravity, then deriving the velocity using the mass of the plug and the acceleration of gravity. Had a light bulb in the top of the pipe so I could see how far the plug raised when the slug hit it. First shot, the plug wasn't heavy enough and I shot the light out. That scared the teach a little, but he calmed down when I told him I'd use a heavier plug for the next shot, and pointed out that even though the auditorium was upstairs, the floor was concrete. I did the tests in the weight room, and displayed the gun at the science fair. Not a word was said.

In college I used to go to class a couple of hours early so I could park on the lot at the top of the hill and shoot crows out of the tall oaks on the highwall (the lot was a former strip mine - a "highwall" is an artificial cliff that's left when they quit removing mountaintop and leave a sheer wall of rock and dirt). The head of campus police used to come up and shoot with me. That was Clinch Valley College back in the day. It's now the University of Virginia's College at Wise, and it has a "no guns" rule. I told the Chancellor a while back that every time I came onto campus, I was breaking his rule (I'm on the Board of Trustees). He stuttered around a little and then said I wasn't a student. I later told him of the UVa ruling. The Chancellor's a nice guy, but he just doesn't know how to process all this. Everytime I see him on the campus I smile and wink. He just looks nervous and flashes me one of them sh!t-eatin' grins bureaucrats use when they don't know whether to wind their watch or scratch their @ss.

Now it's a felony to drive by a school with a gun in the trunk, I reckon. Pitiful!

I don't think it's a good idea to put that online. WHO KNOWS who's checking? I love big-caliber and longe-range rifles and 1911 pistols, and I've got a few.

I can always use another 1911.

You can't bring guns into GMU or VCU buildings, but as a student, if you are caught with it on campus at all, you can and probably will be expelled.

Love it, A group of students at my school are trying to push for concealed carry on campus. My Chancellor stated to me persoanlly that they are working to allow it in open areas, which doesn't help us, I live off campus and the only time I am on campus is for classes or to hang in friends dorms, niether are concidered open areas....
