The Code of Virginia is not preemptible by local statute

hi guys. On the online/electronic/home study classes for meeting CCW requirements.....REMEMBER all you need in VA is a hunter safety course to get your permit! Kinda think ANY pistol safety course with some CCW info. is better than that.

If you haven't read Dan Casey (roanoke.com I believe) and his take on this online CCW training you should. Probably too late to comment on his blog about it but when I read his anti-gun BS all I could think of was what about the Hunter's Safety Course. All his complaints about being able to get a CHP without ever touching a pistol now and never once did he mention it has always been like that because of the Hunter Safety Course. Although I wasn't required to take the course I sat through it with my kids and never once did we touch a firearm of any kind. Come to think of it we never discussed CC laws either, agme laws but no CC laws.

True, the hunter safety course is not sufficient and neither is online training. However, one would hope that someone who gets their CHP will be responsible enough to dig a little deeper before carrying, given the gravity of the issue.
I like being treated like an adult, and there aren't many ways that the government allows it these days.
I agree too, my point about the Hunter's Safety Course is that an anti wrote a column complaining about the online course when all along we've been able to get a CHP based on training that is more concerned with hunting than firearms safety. No matter what course one takes, you cannot buy a handgun and become proficient with it in just a few rounds. Even if you attend face to face training that requires you to fire your pistol, not all of them do in VA, you still need to spend additional time at the range. When learning to shoot 50 or 100 rounds doesn't cut it in my book.

Alligeneral, you raise a good point. I also like the fact you mentioned "Virginia entrusts adults to make appropriate decisions regarding the use of firearms".
And Moccasin is right--"one would hope that someone who gets their CHP will be responsible enough to dig a little deeper before carrying, given the gravity of the issue".
I have the bare minimum, a hunter safety course certificate. I think that I am adequately trained with firearms. Yet, I still plan on taking a course with some family members in Ohio. Their laws require 12 hours of class time plus 2 hours of shooting proficiency. As I figure, it doesn't hurt to sharpen and hone your skills. The point is that I like having the option to respond as an adult and not be pushed by the government.

I'll be honest about the training my wife and I took and what my wife and I used to get our CHP's, we used our DD214's (both were active duty) to satisfy the training requirements. My wife never shot a pistol until we met and then it was a POS .22 short which worked better being thrown at someone. We just did get a pistol, last November and several more since, that was worth using for SD and that she could really use. I shot a 9mm while on active duty along with the POS I just spoke of an a .38 spcl years ago that belonged to my uncle. So shooting a handgun had no effect on getting our CHP's IMO, we got them based on a piece of paper that meets state law. I figure there are quite a bit more on here that did the same thing, that's ok as long as you know you need to prectice. I have 3 different pistols that I carry ans shot 50 rounds through one of them today. Thank God my CZ is more accurate that my Taurus, I carry the CZ most often.
