Delayed Purchased?

Postby jaywade » Mon, 14 Jun 2010 12:18:36

Okay so I'm new to va(moved to leesburg from md) my DL is now 37 days old so I went to Loudoun Guns this morning to complete the transfer of a handgun I brought on gunbroker.

I filled the paper work they submitted it and I got "delayed"

what does that mean ??

now in the last year I have brought several firearms in md w/ no problems (other than the 7 day waiting period) I have purchased 3 other handguns in md that went through no problem.

never been arrested or charged w/ a any crime, have't been in the miltary so no discharge good or bad

what and why would va delay my purchase they(loudoun guns) said I could come back in a couple hours it would be cleared but how often and why does this happen in va?

It might not have anything to do with you or your resident status, it could just be a delay in the VSP's system. Your paperwork might be waiting on a human to give it the once-over and approve it.

Take a long lunch and remind yourself how lucky you are to be living in VA now instead of MD.

It could be anything really. I get delayed EVERY single time. I have no criminal history at all. I got told by a couple of gun stores it could be anything from my last name to my clearance at work. I have a Hispanic last name, but I consider myself white. Another thing, I am the "II", as in a Jr., but they can't input that into the system. Just the actual name. Not saying my dad is a bad guy or anything, but I would assume it would help me quicker if they could put the "II" in there. I do always put my SSN though.

I picked up a new gun the other day from NOVA Armament. In my past purchases the dealer has been put my info into the system and get a pretty quick reply (one time it only took long enough for the web page to refresh that was about 6 weeks ago). This past week I also got delayed. I even went in early at about noon. Apparently I was not the only one to get delayed, NOVA armament mentioned that there were a couple other customers that got delayed as well that day, but they had other customers get approved immediately. In the end, the delay took about 6 hours and I just ended up going back the next day. Fortunately for me I am only about 10 minutes away from the shop so while it can be a little frustrating I wasn't impacted that much. I can see where it would be extremely frustrating for someone that is over 1 hour away from the shop though.

I am glad you got approved and hope you have fun with your new gun. At least you don't have to wait for that 7 days from Maryland anymore and welcome to VA :welcome:

I went through the delay game for a couple of years. Found out when I got my drivers license renewed something was screwed up with my CDL. DMV wouldn't tell me what it was but I haven't been delayed since.

This has been going on for some time. Part of the reason is the staff cuts at the VSP transaction center. Fewer clerks, fewer supervisors, so when a problem comes up it goes into the queue with all the others and takes time to resolve.

There is also speculation that a lot more records have recently been added/made accessible to the checkers. That means (for example) a conviction from 1955 that was previously outside the record is now a part of it, meaning it has to be checked to make sure it isn't disqualifying.

A lot of this would be solved by killing the state system and going to the federal one, but that means less power for the state. (Not really less income, since the program isn't self-supporting as it is.)
